147"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

Why totalitarianism were arised in 20centry when Renaissance has occured six hundreds years ago? Why Facism invaded Europe which is the sourse of modern democracy? These questions may reveal a significant but always neglected dimention to research modernization-tradition. Although people are proud of their intelligence and reason, to avoid tragedy happen again, we should declear the relationship between tradition and modernization.

Admittedly, moderinization is a kind of transcendence to tradition. In some sense, moderinization is based on an idea which is against traditon. Science is a typical example of modern society. Thousands years ago, people believed that earth were flat, and we wre living in the center of universe. This basic priciple of the knowledge of that time is a kind of traditon since it supported religinary traditon strongly. Nobody would query this belief except scienst. Columbus, Bruno and so many scienst payed high cost more than we can imagine to change people's thinking. Long times psat, the arbitray aspect of religion has disappeared and new tradition-reason- has rised slowly which is the foudation of modern society. Acorrding this example, it seem that morderinizaiton is incompatible with tradition.

However, opposite perspective that moderinization cannot bring welfare to people without traditon sounds more reasonable. Tradition, human experience and value system passed from one generation to next, is cristallization of human wisdom. Tration, the heritage of our ancestors, is the most important sourse of truth and knowledge. Cicero, a famous roman philosopher, once claimed that the reaon why roman laws is superior to those legislated by kings is that laws in Rome are not established by one generation. To the contrary, the work of legislating has been finished by many generations and spent several centuries. Of course,
it is impossible that one man is omnipotent like God so that he knows everything. In this sense, laws enacted by people and by history is better. This example reveals that human intelligence and creation should base on tradition and then will be accepted. Another theory support this point is Hayek's liberalism. This important British economist and philosopher in last century maintained that market, even society, have their own spontaneous order and they are the result of human action but not of human design. Thus, our modernization cannot separated from tradition since it is impossible for a society as a spontaneous order be isolated from past.

What is more, many aborted practices illustrate that absent tradition, human beings always fail to achieve their goals. French Revolution, the typical representation of radicalism, broke the shackle of The Monarchy, but never got the freedom or equality. Burke, a genius political philosopher and the father of conservatism, argued that French Revolution may have subverted Monarchy, but not recover freedom. Because this revolution is so radical that they pulled down all traditions such as their Monarchy, their church, their nobility, their laws and so on, and the elements of human society seem all to be destroyed. As it turns out, French Revolution did not bring freedom and modern society to France. So governing based on abstract idea will fail ultimately and what we need is "organic" reform with our tradition. Another example is socialist movements. Although Marx designed a perfect form of society and pointed out how can we construct that society by revolution, history tells us a abstract idea such as socialism cannot come true without the respect to tradition.

To sum up, tradition and modernization is co-exist in our society. Without traditon, modernization cannot come true. Without modernization, tradition cannot be continued. As we all know, basic idea of modern society are from our tradition such as creation, critical thinking, and pursuet of freedom.
