上周末独立日很多美国人选择更经济的驾车方式出行，探望亲朋好友，公路上长长的车龙一辆接一辆，绵延不绝。With more Americans than ever economising by driving, rather than flying, to visit friends and family for last weekend’s Independence Day celebrations, the long, winding lines of bumper-to-bumper traffic must have made more than a few turn around and miss the food and fireworks.

bumper是“缓冲器；保险杆”，bumper-to-bumper是（汽车）拥塞的，一辆接一辆，Heavily crowded and slow-moving, particularly in reference to automobile traffic on a highway (Wiktionary)。
