TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

Citing the statistics indicates that three more times more men than women faint while visiting dentist, the author infers that men are more likely to be distressed than women when having dental work done. Then the author came to conclusion that advertising techniques targeting the male consumers, which emphasize the effective anesthetic techniques and sensible staff to distressed patients, will attract patients. At first glance, the argument is rather convincing, but careful scrutiny reveals that the argument suffer several critical flaws, which undermine the line of reasoning.

First of all, the argument rests on unreliable statistics. The author fails to provide any detailed information about the origin of the statistics. It is entirely possible that only a few dentists or dentists from the same region offer the statistics, which made the representativeness of these statics highly suspicious. Moreover, we can't rule out the possibility that more men suffer from tooth problems or a disproportionate male patients contributed to the statistics, which leads to the invalidity of these statistics. Unless more detailed information about the statistic are given, the statistic which the argument is based on is unconvincing and will certainly weaken the validity of the reasoning.

Secondly, even if we recognize the reliability of the statistics, it is unwarranted for the author to assume that male patients faint more because they are more likely distressed by the ineffective anesthetic techniques and the insensitivity of nervous and suffering patients. The author provides little evidence to establish such causal relationship. Probably more men faint because they receive more pressure in society which has already made them in a worse condition. Then the effect of advertisement aims to these factors will be highly suspicious and the conclusion will be unconvincing.

Moreover, no evidence are provided to ensure the intended effect of the proposed advertising techniques. It is entirely possible that few men will pay attention to such kind of advertisement.
Common sense also tells us that there are many other factors taken into consideration when one choose which dentist to visit. For example, the business hours, the fares and the reputation of the dentist are the most common factors considered by patients besides the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and other good services.

Finally, the advertising target the male might alienate the female patients, which is a big potential market for dentists. There is no evidence given to show that the men consist of the major parts of the dentists' patients. How can the advertisement without the appealing to women safely attract more patients?

In sum, the argument cannot be taken seriously as it stands. To strengthen it, the speaker must provide more information to confirm the validity of the statistics. To better evaluate the argument, the author must show why men become distressed and faint during visits to their dentists and that advertising techniques would in fact achieve its goals.

(我觉得前面那么多的原文照抄最好改一下,最好用更加简洁的自己的语言。不行的话,点到即可)At first glance, the argument is rather convincing, but careful scrutiny reveals that the argument suffer several critical flaws, which undermine the line of reasoning.
First of all, the argument rests on unreliable statistics. The author fails to provide any detailed information about the origin of the statistics. It is entirely possible that only a few dentists or dentists from the same region offer the statistics, which made the representativeness of these statics highly suspicious. Moreover, we can't rule out the possibility that more men suffer from tooth problems (toothache是不是好点?) or a disproportionate male patients contributed to the statistics,(不成比例的男病人组成了数据?啥意思?)
which leads to the invalidity of these statistics. Unless more detailed information about the statistic are (is) given, the statistic which the argument is based on is unconvincing and will certainly weaken the validity of the reasoning.

Secondly, even if we recognize the reliability of the statistics, it is unwarranted for the author to assume that male patients faint more because they are more likely distressed by the ineffective anesthetic techniques and the insensitivity of nervous and suffering patients. (其实,我觉得这里题目有两层推理:1.作者认为是男人要忍受更多的痛苦,所以才会晕倒;2.会更痛苦的原因是麻醉技术不好以及医务人员的不够细致关心。不过把这两个放一起并成一段也OK。)The author provides little evidence to establish such causal relationship. Probably more men faint because they receive more pressure in society which has already made them in a worse condition. Then the effect of advertisement aims (aimed) to these factors will be highly suspicious and the conclusion will be unconvincing.
Moreover, no evidence are (is) provided to ensure the intended effect of the proposed advertising techniques.

(我认为作者没说男人构成了病人的大多数,题目的逻辑是:男人怕疼,会晕倒,所以他们在牙疼时会更少地去看牙医。应该对这个逻辑推理进行批判。)
In sum, the argument cannot be taken seriously as it stands. To strengthen it, the speaker must provide more information to confirm the validity of the statistics. To better evaluate the argument, the author must show why men become distressed and faint during visits to their dentists and that advertising techniques(这个没看懂,是说知道了原因,针对原因进行广告吗?) would in fact achieve its goals.

评语:找到了四个攻击点~~~不错不错,基本没啥错误。模板已经有了,只是有的论证还值得商榷。
