Does skepticism is a necessary to a student? As far as I am concerned, I hold that appropriated doubt to what they are taught plays a significant role during a student's learning career and I agree with the author that students should work hard to the knowledge in the textbooks, besides that, they also ought to possess a skeptical attitude, which is not a comprehensive covering, toward to what they learn in class.
Admittedly, people's conceptions are often filled with all kinds of prejudice from convention or senses that will mislead ourselves and create confusion when we conducting a judgment or suggestion. With lacking the skepticism ability, we will be easily misguided by other's statement that appearing to be true or real, just as the father of modern philosopher, Rene Descartes, considered. The way to dismiss the apparent knowledge derived from tradition and common senses, as he asserted, is to be skeptical. We ought to doubt all that is uncertain and think about it independently unless we generalize the opinions that from our own mind. Hence, skepticism helps us uncover bias and prejudice and lead us to the road of truth.(enlight the road toward to the truth.可能好点...)
Additionally, skepticism, which inspires people with curiosity and passion, is also the original of creation. Turning the camera to one of the greatest scientists, Albert Einstein, we will notice how skepticism enjoys obvious advantage to a person's creation. During Einstein's early research, he found some problems in the theory of Newton when an object's speed close to that of light and then, set himself to focus on them skeptically. Finally he discovered the limitation of Newton's laws, which stated that they could only be applied in inertial frame of reference and established the theory of relativity to the world. It is safe to say Einstein's success result in part from standing on the shoulders of giants while for the most, in from that skepticism encourage him to fall into creation, against traditional concepts.
However, we should also realize that the courses students study in schools, especially the basic curriculums that they take part in, are all well established and proved. That is to say, for most of the knowledge, it is able to stand the test of time successfully. The basic knowledge just likes the foundation of a building, it helps students to construct their own cognition system and cultivate their unique capabilities of learning skills. Therefore, students should study those courses with absolute enthusiasm and carefulness, rather than questioning why they have to learn that or is there anything wrong with the knowledge in the textbooks, which will undoubtedly slow down their learning speed. In this special situation, skepticism is not a smart choice among students for it will bring an unfavorable influence to their development.
To sum up, I agree with the speaker for most that skepticism is indispensable for it will evolve a student's independently thinking capacity and motivate his or her creation to the maximum. But in some special educational procedure, we should restrict their skepticism.
Main thesis
