题目:ISSUE51 - "Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."
The speaker asserts that the effectiveness of education can only be achieved on the condition that it is specifically designed to cater for every student's individual needs and interests. In general, I cannot agree with the speaker's statement.
Admittedly, interests and needs contribute enormously to one's accomplishment. As an influential impetus, interests can drive students to spare no pains to require knowledge, master skills, and sharpen their ability in the fields they are concerned with. We can hardly imagine one can make huge progress in a realm which barely interests him. As the saying goes, interest is the best teacher.
Nevertheless, the statement of the speaker goes so far that it request education meet the individual needs and interests of each student, which is impossible as it stands. People differ their needs and interests due to different backgrounds and experiences. The curriculum can hardly be instituted respectively in terms of every student's interests, which would lay heavy burden on the teaching resources undoubtedly. In other words, the existing education system is still unable to provide the possibility to meet everyone’s interests and needs.
On the other hand, we do not necessarily expect the education to be in favor of every student, because it is also of vital importance to raise generalists in the modern society. Study focusing only on one’s own interest will inevitably lead to narrowness of horizons, confining him/her to think in a banal and monotonous way. There is no denying that some fields of knowledge may seem to be boring and tedious, which contribute a lot to other disciplines after all. For example, mathematics may be less interested in and thus ignored by students in other departments, but we should not overlook its value in variable fields ranging from architecture to economics. In this sense, we cannot possibly neglect a certain field of knowledge simply because is not to our taste. In addition, some moral courses, which make crucial impacts on the personalities and characters of students, should exist in spite of their interests or else. A recent survey in a series of top-class universities reveals that, the students tend to be more politely and courteous in their daily lives if they have received corresponding courses within school, which leads to their smoother relationship with colleagues in their careers. As a consequence, notwithstanding being uninteresting, some courses should be compulsory for students.
Last but not least, the so-called interests are able to be cultivated, which is also an indispensable responsibility of education. Through education, students concentrating on science and technology are capable of learning to appreciate art and history; while literature fans can also have access to understandings about the universe we are living in. Students can find that different disciplines are actually connected closely and have many aspects essentially in common, which help them better understand their majors.
In sum, I concede that one's needs and interests can make impressive impacts on his/her progress and success. However, education is expected transcend the limitations of individual needs and interests, aiming at fostering generalists talented in broader fields. For that matter, I suggest that schools should open up sufficient selected courses for students to choose from discretionarily. Only through this can education be truly effective. |
