TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

It is a trend that more and more students are dreamed of being researchers and scholars, while which field should be selected and engaged in is often a hard problem for them. In my point of view, individual interests are the best direction to pursue, not matter how unusual or idiosyncratic they may seem, when scholars and researchers are thinking of their career in the academic world and their contribution to the large society.
To begin with, the goal of scholars and researchers is actually not merely the production in industry but exploration in the acadmic world. As we know, what scholars concern most is the knowledge. They are working hard, in order to discover and find the unknown knowledge and truth in the world. All knowledges that are newly found or worked out can be said as the contribution to the whole academic system, which may be not helpful to the large society. Furthermore, as the education system is becoming larger and larger, the definition of scholar becomes wider and wider. Some areas of knowledge, which would never be defined as a kind of discipline or course, have entered the world of scholar, such as the theory of astrology. Let alone the contribution they can make to the whole society. Like astrology, there are some researchers working on it, but who would tell the application of them? No one. This may be owing to the credibility. Because the research in astrology can not prove that this theory is at all credible or unreasonable nowadays, it is difficult and at risk for the society to apply the theory into practice, such as predicting the destiny of our future.
Secondly, some researches may seem idiosyncratic and may be not applicable to the society directly, but there may exist other approaches for them to contribute to the society. The theory can be unusual, but it can also be the rock to a street, the water to a fish and the seed to a flower. That is to say, some applications may consist such theory or knowledge. In this case, they are vital and should not be ignored. For example, some fields in mathematics may seem not helpful to the construction of our society, but they can be the base of all other research, such as computers, electronics, economics, etc. Without the knowledge of mathematics, the other fields will not be able to be investigated and analysed any more.
Last but not least, doing research is, like working as an engineer or a manager, actually a kind of job. Some researches can be closely related to the society, which is more technical and industrial, while some may be not, looking more like artistic creation and literature. This difference is inevitable in the academic world. And even thought some fields are unusual, they are also necessary to be studied and investigated. Such as the fields of computer, there are two main directions. One is computer science while the other is computer engineering. Some courses in computer science can be really mathematical, which is focused on the computation and theory. But in computer engineering, researchers are mainly working on the industrial production, such as software engineering - studying how to write effective software. As we know, the computer engineering is based on the computer science. Without the study of computer theory, the engineering will be in vain. That is to say, every floor on the academic building should be seriously taken care of, since damage to each floor, especially the basic floor which accordingly is the theory part in academy, can be a fatal destruction of the whole building.
To sum it up, the academic world is so large that it is inevitable that some fields are more relevant to the theory and less associated to the application to society. It is more important for researches to pursue their individual interests regardless of the association between the fields and the society. |
