TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."
WORDS: 451          TIME: 00:36:51          DATE: 2009-7-26 8:41:50

Should the scholars and reseachers pay more attention to their individual interests than concern whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society? The author obviously agrees with the former, but I do not. Whether the work of researchers and scholars makes a contribution to the larger society is much more important that whether they are interested in them.

First, I had to agree that interest is very important during the study of scholars and reseachers. If they do not interest in the field that they study, they will not go further more and will not get new found. Because they maybe do not care whether research result so they do not try them best and even they might be hate the research. So I sofar agree that the scholars should be interested in the field that they study.

Second,  as what i have said upon, it is important that they pursue their individual interests but it does not mean that whatever unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.  On the first hand , scholars and researchers have freedom in their study and like in other fields freedom has a probabe extents. They can not study the things which obeys the law . On the other hand,   the pursuit of individual interests by scholars and researcher should not consist of treacherous and evil interests that may damage the well-being of individuals or society as a whole. There still are conventions, regulations, moral and ethic commitments that scientists must obey.

Last but not least, what sicentists are pursuing is to explore the unknown frontiers of the world, which means they themselves are also not very sure what they would discover, so no mention what impact on society their discoveried whill have. Actually, most discoveries were born by accidents, or were the byproducts in the process of other research. X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist , Wilhelm Konrad Rontgen,  in 1895 by accident. And it is true that what she discovered not only crowned her with Nobel Prize, but also enormously contributed to our society.

In sum, scholars should honor-bound to seek only the truth, and not pursue some ulterior agenda. They should be self-critical, carefully inspecting their work from a skeptical point of view, to find the weaknesses and possible ways of overcoming them. They should spend time on introspection about just what the most likely sources of bias in his or her work are likely to be. And they should be scrupulously honest, and never hide data that go against the hypothesis being argued for. On this way,  scholars and reseachers can make more contributions to the larger society and can choose some fields which they are interested in properly.

Should the scholars and reseachers pay more attention to theirindividual interests than concern whether their work makes acontribution to the larger society? The author obviously agrees with theformer, but I do not. Whether the work of researchers and scholarsmakes a contribution to the larger society is much more important that(than)whether they are interested in them.

First, I had to agree that interest is very important during the studyof scholars and reseachers. If they do not interest in the field thatthey study, they will not go further more and will not get new found.Because they maybe(maybe应该去掉) do not care whether research result so they do nottry them best and even they might be hate the research. So I sofaragree that the scholars should be interested in the field that theystudy.

Second,  as what i have said upon, it is important that they pursuetheir individual interests but it does not mean that whatever unusualor idiosyncratic those interests may seem.  On the first hand ,scholars and researchers have freedom in their study and like in otherfields freedom has a probabe(这个是不是typo了?查了webster没看到这个词) extents. They can not study the thingswhich obeys the law . On the other hand,   the pursuit of individualinterests by scholars and researcher should not consist of treacherousand evil interests that may damage the well-being of individuals orsociety as a whole. There still are conventions, regulations, moral andethic commitments that scientists must obey.(哈哈,这两句和我写的一样,看来大家都参考的作文大讲堂)

Last but not least, what sicentists are pursuing is to explore theunknown frontiers of the world, which means they themselves are alsonot very sure what they would discover, so no mention what impact onsociety their discoveried whill have. Actually, most discoveries wereborn by accidents, or were the byproducts in the process of otherresearch.(前面这一段好像也是模板?) X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist , WilhelmKonrad Rontgen,  in 1895 by accident. And it is true that what shediscovered not only crowned her with Nobel Prize, but also enormouslycontributed to our society.

In sum, scholars should honor-bound(学到新词了) to seek only the truth, and notpursue some ulterior agenda. They should be self-critical, carefullyinspecting their work from a skeptical point of view, to find theweaknesses and possible ways of overcoming them. They should spend timeon introspection about just what the most likely sources of bias in hisor her work are likely to be. And they should be scrupulously honest, and never hide data that go against the hypothesis being argued for. Onthis way,  scholars and reseachers can make more contributions to thelarger society and can choose some fields which they are interested inproperly.
