Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.
People are always talking about whether the work of scholars and researchers should be guided by their individual interests, even some of which are unusual or idiosyncratic. In my opinion, however, scholars and researchers should concerns more about their work's merits to the society rather than their individual interests, as discussed below.
Admittedly, individual interests, which serve as inexhaustible powers arouse scholars' and researchers' enthusiasm to make sure them work passionately. It seems that the their work is aimless and just directed by the interests, yet the result it brings can never be overlooked, especially in scientific area, where inventions call for curiosity and creativity besides enduring hard work. For example, the first antibiotic drugs, penicillin, was discovered by Scottish scientist Alexander Fleming, who showed great curiosity about the blue-green mould on the petri-dish. Obviously, his great interest of his work lead to this great discovery; suppose if Fleming was forced to do the research he did not like, how could he make such a great contribution to all the human being?
On the other hand, scholars and researchers, as an important part of the society, should also feel obliged to link their work with people's life, or to make a progress with the help of knowledge and technology. In developed countries, colleges and institutions cost billions of dollars every year, hence it is reasonable to give the public an answer where these dollars are spent, or whether these dollars are worthwhile. The scholar’s and researchers’ concern of the whole society instead of their own interests, to some extent satisfies the public, and wins continuous support. Since it is not sure whether some of the interesting ideas of the researchers are beneficial to society, a costly but useless project stemmed from one's curiosity is doomed to fail and evoke denouncement from the public.
Moreover, as for some scholars and researchers, with a high reputation in their research realm they serve as pioneers and have a great influence of the young generation. If they make up their minds and devote themselves to contribute the larger society, positive effects will be lead to and they are good examples of their followers. On the contrary, merely pursuing their own interests which may even be unusual or idiosyncratic, scholars and researchers may lead the young go astray, for no one can tell whether their attempts are true or false. For example, it is said the great physician, spent his late life to prove the existence of God. In individual respect, we can not blame that what he did was ridiculous because it was his own business; yet it should never be proposed since this interest was followed by others, who were distracted from scientific research and all this did no good to society.
To sum up, interests play an important role in researches, they should never be overlooked. As a coin has two sides, however, interests sometimes lead the wrong way even have some negative effect on the public. Moreover, it is the responsibility that scholars and researchers work should more or less contribute to the larger society. For those who work in colleges with their students, they need to think twice before choosing their subjects since their choices sometimes show a trend of the later research. |
