TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complextoday that looking back for an understanding of the past provides littleguidance for living in the present."
The development of human civilization islike the process of climbing a staircase. Trends are that the troublesdisturbing us today are always more complex and new than that of yesterday. Forthat matter, many people maintained the opinion that looking back for anunderstanding of the past are of little use to solve today's problems and thus shouldnot be paid much attention to. I disagree with this point of view.
Admittedly, people nowadays are facingproblems out of the wildest imagination of our ancestors. While they strivedfor food and shelters in the past, people nowadays are struggling in the bog ofnihilism and are bothered by questions like what is the meaning of existence;also, they tried their best to fight against harsh nature to survive while weday by day accentuate the importance of protecting the delicate environment. Thefast development of science and technology, causing a series of problems likethreatening of nuclear weapons and biochemical weapons, has forced us to worryabout our future in a mood more complicated than ever. At first glance, hardlyany hint of ways to effectively deal with these brand new problems could befound in history. Yet this is not true. Always a great deal can be learned fromhistory. It’s just that we need be wise enough to figure them out.
The best thing about history is thatsometimes it could provide us with instant answers to what bothers us today.Backward countries could learn a lot from advanced countries when they stepinto a period that other advanced countries has once experienced before. Chinesecriminal law amendment draws a lot of successful experience of western countrieswhose legal systems are much more complete. Also, it prevent backward countriesfrom making some horrible mistakes. Chinese government choose to balance theeconomic development and environmental protection only because they witness howhigh a price European countries have paid for their pollution first treatmentlater strategy.
What’s more, history could help us figureout the basic rules guiding people and society’s operation in the past, atpresent and in future. For thousands of years we have witnessed all kinds ofhuman activities. Yet there are some basic rules directing all societal andindividual activities which hardly change. Karl Marx, the author of on capital, reveals the secrets of social change by examining the development of humansociety in different times and at different places, finally formulating a basiclaw suits all society and pointed out a direction for desperate people fightingfor their rights at that time. That is a typical example of how learning historycould sever to solve new problems. History is the only resource we could relyon to formulate a law about how society function. People always need to havesome sense of how the society functions to run their own lives.
As the old saying goes, nothing is new under the sun. History is a greattextbook, while only wise man could understand what it means and use it toguide their lives.
