TOPIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

The arguer puts forward several facts to support his conclusion that the opening of C Note in Monroe will surely bring profits so that they should be allowed give the small business loan. However, those facts are questionable and I will discuss each of them in turn.
First of all, the author contains that C Note would have the local market all to itself, because of no jazz club nearby. Why the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away? Is that just telling us that there's no need for jazz club in Monroe? To evaluate the market is available or not, obviously, is not so simple that just see weather there are any completers. The developers should look for much more information to examine the market.
Even if there are no completers around in Monroe, and leave an excellent market to C Note. We cannot say that C Note will gain money for three reasons as follow. Firstly, over 100,000 people attended the jazz festival in Monroe last year doesn't mean jazz is extremely popular in Monroe. Those amounts of people may come from other cities and even all over the nation. Moreover, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe means anything. Few famous jazz musicians are not the symbol of the citizens, they may just live in Monroe because of its good environment, high welfare, low price of apartment, or convenient transportation. In addition, the fact that high-rated radio program in Monroe is “Jazz Nightly”, not only cannot support that the people would take part in the C Note club, but, on the contrary, may make an obstructive effect. In the other words, the program is so popular that the new club would not attract many customers. What is possible that people live in Monroe prefer listening to radio, rather than spending money to go to clubs to have fun.
Finally, the national study would not adapt to Monroe. There may be great differences in different areas in a nation, thus, the statistics from the national study cannot reflect the real situations of local. What’s more, the typical jazz fan cannot represent of the general people who have interests on jazz. Generally, the typical jazz fan may have a crazy pursue to jazz, in the constant, the general people may just like to listen jazz. Therefore, spends on jazz would be quiet different between those two groups of people. After that, the entertainment concludes all kinds of ways, not only the way to participate in club.
In conclusion, the argument, while it seems full of evidence at first, has some logical flaws as discussed above. It should be improved by more useful facts, for instance, how is the club popular in Monroe, how many jazz fans in Monroe, or something else. Without those facts, the arguer could not say that the new jazz club, C Note, would be profitable absolutely.
