TOPIC: ARGUMENT7 - The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Clearview newspaper.
"In the next mayoral election, residents of Clearview should vote for Ann Green, who is a member of the Good Earth Coalition, rather than for Frank Braun, a member of the Clearview town council, because the current members are not protecting our environment. For example, during the past year the number of factories in Clearview has doubled, air pollution levels have increased, and the local hospital has treated 25 percent more patients with respiratory illnesses. If we elect Ann Green, the environmental problems in Clearview will certainly be solved."

The arguer claimed that residents of Clearview should not vote for Ann Green for several untenable reasons.
To begin with, from the facts listed by the arguer, we can't conclude that the current members of Clearview town council are not protecting the environment. The number of the factories just indicates the development of local economy and will not harm the environment if they adopt the clean production technology. Moreover, maybe it's the increase of private cars that contributes to the air pollution, or it is just for the nearby city's sake (Air pollution is different from other pollution and it can transfer from one city to another very quickly because of the wind). Although air pollution has seminal influence on the outbreak of respiratory illnesses, the possible dramatic change of climate may be one of the alternative factors which can't be ignored.
Take a step back, even if the current council really didn't do enough job to protect the environment, there is no evidence that Frank Braun will not protect the environment after he is elected. Although he is a member of current council, maybe he is just the one who is in charge with education. And it is not his fault that the environment is not well protected. Maybe he is always insisting on pro-environment but his proposal didn't attract much attention because too many other members opposed to that. If so, now we should give him another chance to continue this though but beneficial job.
Lastly, the fact that Ann Green is a member of the Good Earth dose not equate that he is a really a pro-environment activist, just as we can't guarantee that anyone comes from a famous college is a real intellect. Furthermore there is no evidence that even he is elected, the environmental problems will be solved, for politics is politics, and it is so fickle and always hinges on the profit of big companies .
As analysed above, the author should give more evidence to make his claim sound. Otherwise, I suspend my judgement to his recommendation. |
