TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
WORDS: 573

As our society developing rapidly, more and more freedom is given to every individual, thus there are more and more choices left for us. I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion that total absence of choice is getting extremely rare nowadays, while further reflection reveals that even there are plenty of choices we may take, the optimal ones are always very limited, so that we should make our choices very carefully every time.
To begin with, I contend that it is totally necessary to sort choices into two types--the major ones and the minor ones. The minor choices people would make is/are in our everyday routine--which clothes should I wear today? Or should I firstly go for shopping or finish my work? Those choices are trivial and would cause no huge impact on our life, so we don't have to pay too much attention on this kind of choices. On the contrary, the major choices are relating to those would decide our life, or make a big difference(觉得像minor choices一样举几个例子会更好) ever since, which is significant to us to a large extend.
In the old days, as the society was not completely developed, the opportunity of making major choices was rather limited. Ordinary people were unable to broaden their horizons and get deeper understanding of other occupations or cultures if they were not born in some noble families. Thus, when it comes to the big issue of how they would live their life, they merely had any other choices than inheriting his family's occupation. Therefore, it was very common that a carpenter's child became another carpenter as well, and an army officer would cultivate his son another soldier.
However, as the world has developed as a whole and many new technologies have prevailed in our modern life, such opportunities of making major choices are no longer unusual. With a reasonable tuition, we are able to learn anything we want to learn in order to promote our skills for living. Thus it is safe to say our fates are not decided when we were born. Despite of some special cases, such as a recruiting of the army when our nation has involved in a war, people now enjoy an unprecedented freedom of making their own choices of becoming what they want to be. Bill Gates, once a Harvard student who has boldly made his choice of drop/dropping from school and start/starting his own career, turned out to be a successful millionaire in charge of the most powerful software company later in his life.
Albeit the opportunity of making choices is ample in our life now, it doesn't mean that we may make our choices at will. Because many teenagers, who always tend to hold a drifting attitude towards themselves, would likely to make some unwise or irresponsible choices for their life, rendering themselves in regret in the future. Therefore it would be necessary for their parents to make choices for them or give them sound guides. It seems to be a deprivation for teenagers of the right of making their own choices, but it would be surely beneficial in the long run.
In the final analysis, even the choices given are much more than ever as the society develops, we shouldn't hastily make our choices on a whim. We should ask the seniors for advice before we make any major choices of our own, and only by that way can us/we ensure/guarantee ourselves a bright future.
