TOPIC: ISSUE40 - "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

The speaker claims that it is unnecessary for scholars and researchers to concern with whether their work contribute to the larger society, instead they should focus only on their individual interests, no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. In my opinion, interests are vital to scientific research, but this does not necessarily mean that we can overlook other aspects about researches.

As Einstein once said and I paraphrase, interest is the best teacher. It is also the case when it comes to scientific research; interest is the primary motivation for a scholar to pursue his goal. Without interest, it is impossible to make significant breakthrough in science. Interest is also important to innovation; many brilliant ideas in human history are brought about by people who have great interests in certain field. For instance, Thomas Edison, the American inventor, scientist and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and a long-lasting, practical electric light bulb. While he only received three months of official schooling, his mother home schooled him later.
He made a living by selling newspapers and candy on a train at an early age. But he had a curious mind and showed great interests in many fields, such interests encouraged him to learn from books and try to invent through countless experiments.

While on the other hand, individual's interests should be guided to a right direction, and some interests that are against the benefits of a majority of other people should be redressed. For example, John Macleod was a British physician, physiologist, and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, who is most known for his work on carbohydrate metabolism and insulin.
When he was in primary school, Harvey was interested in playing with small animals such as dogs and cats, once he wanted to see what a dog’s viscera was like, so he killed a dog with several friends. But that is the headmaster’s dog. The headmaster did not punish him; instead he let Macleod draw two pictures of the dog's skeleton and blood circulation. Thus motivate Harvey's interests in physiology.

Interests should never be the only thing that scholars care about; they should keep in mind the overall welfare of human, because the ultimate goal of science and technology is to bring benefits to human beings. This point is especially important to scientists, since they have the ability to make great progress and on the other hand severe damage. For example, the technology to harness the power of atom, if it is used improperly, would bring about fatal results to mankind. Just imagining how many innocent people would be murdered and maimed by atomic blasts. Another example is the technology of cloning, some scientists without the sense of social responsibility is trying to conduct human cloning, which may cause great ethic crisis and fundamentally reverse human society to chaos.

Although scientists and scholars should keep social responsibility in mind, as a society we should not place too much limitation and stress on them. Excessive limitation on both mind and behavior of scientist would suppress innovation, and has a side effect on the emerging of new ideas. The society should provide a free and democratic environment for scientific research. In an autocratic society where scholars have very little freedom there can hardly be any significant scientific achievement.

In conclusion, while stressing the importance of interests on scientific research, we should not neglect the social responsibilities of scientists and scholars. These two respects are not mutually exclusive; the proper combination of them could create the most benefits to our society.

第三段的例子不能支持观点
四段段首加however
Just imagining how many innocent people would be murdered and maimed by atomic blasts少主语
sciencists ...... are
conduct不妥,是想说实现的意思吗?put .. in reality? 还是指研究? do research about?
while 用的较多,少用些吧
还有he,可以改成Edison
at an early age 不知道这么说对不对

第三段列子确实很别扭,不妥。
