rgument 14
There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring.

In this argument, the arguer states that growing vegetables by oneself is attracting more and more people’ eyes and the quality of fresh vegetables selling in supermarkets can not satisfy many consumers according to a national survey. The arguer also states that the magazine has sold most at the Village News is the gardening magazine Great Gardens during three months. Then the arguer concludes that we should greatly expand the kinds of vegetable seeds in store in order to increase the profits of our Green Thumb Gardening Center. However, this argument relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.

Firstly, the arguer cites that a notional survey conducted last month indicated that the quality of fresh vegetables selling in supermarkets can not satisfy many consumers in order to support his/her claim. But the dissatisfaction with the quality of fresh vegetables does not mean that the consumers are willing to grow vegetables by themselves. They could buy fresh vegetables form the farmer directly instead of buying those in the supermarket so that the quality of vegetables can be be guaranteed.Additionally, the arguer mentions that the time for the survey is last month. Perhaps after the last month supermarkets pay more attention to the quality of the vegetables .so now the quality of vegetables is better than last month which can make most people satisfied. Since the arguer fails to account for these possibilities, so the claim is unwarranted.

Secondly, the national survey showing that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets would lend support to the arguer only if the local consumers typify the national consumers. However, the arguer provides no credible evidence that this is the case.

Thirdly ,nor does the fact that the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out most at the Villages News stand in the past three month support to the arguer’s claim . People may buy the gardening magazine to learn how to plant flowers or sufficient ways to manage their garden instead of learning how to grow vegetables by themselves.

Finally, there are other means and routes to increase the profits of Green Thumb Gardening Center besides expanding the all kinds of vegetable seeds. Without the good management, it is also hard to make money. Market environment is not the only factor we should consider. So without ruling out the alternative factors, the arguer cannot justify the conclusion that expanding the kinds of vegetable seeds in store can increase the profit of Gardening Center.

In sum, the arguer’s conclusion is unconvincing and arguable. To bolster it, the arguer should provide clear information from the further investigation that how many people is willing to grow vegetables by themselves and the reason for it .the arguer also consider that how to manage the Green Thumb Gardening Center to make more profits .
