It is universally acknowledged that college faculty should work outside their academic field in professional work related to their academic area for the purpose of enhancing the quality of teaching at the level of college and university. However,no one can deny the fact that it is impossible for college faculty in every academic area to accomplish the purpose by doing practical work outside their academia. As far as I am concerned, with respect to the areas in which outside work is not appropriate,I strongly intend to stand on the point which the speaker give us.
As a matter of fact,I have to call the statement which acquires qualification in two aspects into some questions.First of all,it's inappropriate for college faculty of some academic areas in which there exists no professional work to do that. This is specially true in the areas of humanities. As a consequence,is it advisable to ferret out some outside work for the professors of history or mathematics?Secondly, the statement forgets to take that whether in several other academic areas practical work that occur outside the academic field can be involved in a professor's academic duties into account.Especially,it is true that professors actively engage in the practical experience by imparting the methods and techniques to their students at class in some areas such as music, drawing and so on.
Without the two qualifications mentioned above,I absolutely agree that it is amazingly benefical that college faculty need work as a professional outside their academic field. At first, professors can complement academic duties with practical experiences in their instructions at class. It is by adopting this method, making students become more interested in studying their academic field and even motivate several students to pursue the field as careers in his or her life.Morever, practical experiences in the academic fieid can boost a professor's reputation in the field. In my experience as a student, faculty who work as a professional relevant to their academia give students the class with fresh thoughts as well as a contagious excitement about the subject.Obviously, they bring to their students many practical facts and explanations of principles and theories which are presented in textbooks. Also, students are able to obtain much necessarily updating information from which they understand how they can do for the purpose of being adequate for work in the field and the tendency of current job market. For instance,Yang Hongguang,a psychology professor at my college, works in a hospital as a psychologist, combined the teaching with his practical experiences. Not only do the students benefit from his experiences which he gained by the process of contacting with his patients, but also his composition
about the source of mental diseases through his clinical observations to his patients which was published in a celebrated physic magazine in our country advanced him to national prominence as an expert in the field.
In summary, from what has been discussed above we can arrive at the conclusion safely that it is of great worthy that college professors should do the practical work related to their academia for improving the quality of the instruction. At the same time, there is no escaping the fact that our government, which was ever blind to this, may take some effective measures to encourage college faculty of some academic fields to work as a professional outside their academia. |
