TOPIC: ARGUMENT14 - The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."
The aothor concludes their company can increase the profit by expanding vefetable seeds for garders this coming spring. To support the conclusion,he provides a result of survey, which indicates a dissatisfication in the vegetables available in supermarket; And the evidence about the fact----the sold-out of Great Gardens magazine in this three month. While this argue is well-designed, bacause of some flaws in analysis, it is not well-supported.
When it comes to the first evidence----a national survey, there is no evidence to indicate it correctly reflects the local reality. From the common sence, the developing levels are different from place to place accross a country. And accordingly, the interests and the consuming habits are diverse. In article, the town may near to farms, and perhaps their people would like to buy vegetables directly from famers insteading of from supermarket, if so, the survey is useless and the evidences is uncomvincing. Moreover, The national survey indicates that consumers are dissatisfied with the vegetables supplied in supermarket, but do the town residence have the same dislike with the supermarket vegetables? Or the local supermarket vegetables is very good in quality as wll as in low price which is welcomed by the people here? As the local situation is always unique, the national survey may be not well-reflect the fact, in turn, do not support the conclusion.
Secondly, even if the survey is truthfuly showing the dissatification of the town dwellers, the author also fails to use the evidence of the sell condition of magazine to backing the final conclusion. Perhaps gardening was popular these months so the magaines is well sold to meet the need of people’s interests; Or perhaps the people here just interested in the flower gardering so they are found in the magzine, but indiffernet with the vegetable gardening. Without eliminate other reasons to why the magzine is well-sold, the evidence is unreliable as it stands.
Thirdly, the aothor unfairly asserts the profit of their company will increase but ingores other competitors in this market. Considering the prices, qualities and services, the Green Thumb Gardening Center did well display its advantages in this argumant. So it lacks evidence to imply the recidence will buy their products but not others'. Therfore, only depends on the limited information in the article----without the consideration of cost, and other competers’ condations, the prediction of the increasing of profit in the Green Thumb Gardening Center is not that convincing to me.
To sum up,the author concludes too hastily that the profit of their company will increase in the coming spring, whereas his deduction is unwarranted. To strengthen the argue, more evidence should provide to reflect the real comsuming habits of the residences as well as the attitude they towards to the supermarket suppilied vegetable. Moreover, the willingness whether they want to gardning vegetables by their own should also be proved. Finally, it is necessary to consider other competitors to ensure their profect in the coming spring. |
