One’s appearance is the first impression to other persons. According to the speaker, the way by which people look, address, behavior reflects personal attitude and interests as well as a society’s ideas and values. I agree with this statement but preserve my view. In other ways the appearance can not tell a true story about individual characters.

The way people look, address and behavior inform us the aspects of individual attitude and interest. Other than the purpose of keeping warm and covering body, the equally important purpose is to demonstrate of personal attitude towards vocation. A person with suit might make us believe him to work in a solemn environment, such as those involving business negotiation and giving lecture in public. While a person wearing casual cloth is inclined to work in a company which requires massive imagination and innovation likes an advertisement company or a software company. Moreover, the speech and behavior can also be an indicator of personal nature. How to deal with a conflict, for instance, tells us individual idea. The one, who use the method of compromising and joking to handle the conflict, is more likely to process excellence communicating skill. While one presents difficulty in dealing with human relationship if one shows aggressive and confrontational appearance in the face of conflict.

The appearance can also play a vital role in demonstration of social ideas and values. People use dressing to identify themselves. Arab women, who is surbordinate in national culture, are required to wear headcloth when go out. The romantic France people often wear leisure cloth. When it comes to dietary habits, pork is forbidden to eat in Islamic culture. In the manner of speech, Indian prefer to talk to their friends closely while English tend to keep a distance while talking.  Expect for the different appearance between the people of different country, the appearance can also indicate the significant culture change in one country. One of the paradigmatic examples is the appearance change in China after “Reform and Open” policy. Before “Reform and Open” policy, Chinese could only allowed to wear Chinese tunic suit, nevertheless Chinese have more choices on cloth due to the mind emancipation brought by “Reform and Open” policy.

Nevertheless, sometimes the appearance is deceiving. Common sense tells us that famous people usually have proper wear and behavior. But this is not true, otherwise, how could one explain that Einstein, the discover of theory of relatively, appears with long whit hair and old clothes, and LongpinYuan, the father of hybrid rice, is dressed in a simple and cheap suit, which cost only fifteen yuan? Also, one often link a rich person with elegant and gorgeous. However, we are slowing coming to learn that a myriad of magnate likes simple and plain dressing. In a word, we can not evaluate a person only through one’s appearance.

To sum up, admittedly, appearance instructs us to be aware of both personal characters and national distinctive values.  However, just as the saying goes “Beauty is not skin deep”, not appearance is always the correct method to judge of individual state and idea.

The dress and the conduct of people usuallyconnect with their thinking tightly. The author claims that we can concludepeople's ideas and values. Actually, the appearance and behavior indicate muchof people's habits and ideas, but not all values of the society.

Generally speaking, the clothes peopledress show their attitudes toward beauty of the society. The improvement inappearance means people have different life styles. For example, in China, peopleusually wore a kind of special shoes which can prevent the water in rainingdays ten years ago, but these shoes looked ugly and were very uncomfortable.Today many people wore sports shoes or leather shoes to deal with the water.From that we can see people's attitudes changing toward the dress. People wouldnot wear ugly shoes in order to prevent water because they think beauty is moreimportant than other factors.

Besides, from the conduct of generalpublic, we can see their values. Today more and more Chinese people care abouthow to earn money more and more. After a hard working, they still want to earnmore money in their spare time, such as taking small investment on stock orreal estate. Such things infer that people are becoming more realistic in thesedays, a house, a car have been turning out to be the most of Chinese youth'sdreams.

However, there are still many values wecannot know by observation because they are not so superficial. What we see iswhat people are dong, not what they are thinking. As we know from above, manyChinese have strong desire of earning money these days, yet their thinkingabout how to spend money are different. Some are going to buy good staff fortheir parents, some want to buy a house and a car as mentioned before, and somewant to have a luxury life after earning enough money, etc. These differentvalues cannot be seen from their conduct but be concluded only throughcommunicating with them.

In sum, the observation is not the only wayto know the value of the society.
