208. "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

It is by making sense of a person's appearance, clothes and behaviors we start to know about the others. This is not only true for an individual to understand another fellow man, but also true for person from a foreign country to approach another society. However, by observing these apparent phenomena, we merely scratched the surface of a different nation. Therefore, an over-all understanding of a society is based on deep probe into its culture.

As mentioned above, our understanding of another society starts by direct observation of the way its people dress, speak and act, and, making contrast. Typical of it is the wedding progress. In western society, the marriage begin by a man's expression of love and proposal to his girlfriend, and after the girl's acceptance they are engaged to each other, so direct and simplified; while in China this procedure is much complex, especially in ancient time, when marriage is largely be decided by the parents. Both the betrothal gifts from the bridegroom and the dowry of the bride are prepared strictly based on the ritual, showing much sense of conformity and tradition. In addition, the western form of weddings are mostly held in Church because of their belief in God; while Chinese wedding are no excerption held in the face of the parents of the gloom, which owning much to the conception man dominates the family. This illustrates the points that though contrast of how people in different society behave we can see clearly the apparent notion of their culture.

With the process of globalization, cultural difference has been much disguised by the unification of international communication. People in different countries are generally using English as the international language and wear uniform in a constitution, making the understanding of each other's cultural notion and costume more obscure. Furthermore, judging another person directly though the impression may sometime be misleading, for even the same expression may have different understanding in different country. For example, the expression of surprise in western society means anger in eastern culture; also, people in eastern country tends to focus more on eye contact, while western people show no preference to a special part of face. To this extant, to fully appreciate another culture we shall develop a thoroughly sense of perspective.

Tracing back to a country's history will provide us proper guidance to our knowledge and understanding in that a majority of notions are rooted in history. If you make a comparison between American's establishment through emigration's Independence War and the United Kingdom’s chaos when Monarchy was once interrupted, you shall understand more about the American Dream of freedom and democracy, as well as the Englishmen's pride and esteem of their king/queen. Hence there comes an overall understanding of different culture.

From the discussion above, we see the process of a whole understanding of another society, starting by noticing and comparison people's direct traits while developing though appreciation of its history and even other forms. After all, understanding another culture is no easy task, and the more perspectives you try to approach it from, the further your understanding goes.
