Does the past provide little guidance for living in the present for so much is new and complex today, as the speaker claims? While I concede that the world today is indeed totally different from it in any past era when it comes to the technology and attitudes people hold. I find the speaker's assertion overstates the difference when it comes to spiritual factors such as humanity. Moreover, the speaker’s assertion is also problematic with the respect to politics; history can always serve as guidance when leaders make decisions.
Firstly, questions involve humanity and the origin of human never alter with time. Who am I? Where did I come from? Does soul really exist? These questions beset human beings for thousands of years. By absorbing the wisdom of sages in the past and researching the evolutional history of human, people gain better understanding of the identification.
Further more, the rulers of a country can benefit from looking into the historical track of their own country. The history informs us that the wane and rising of a nation always conforms to certain patterns. For example, in 1800s China closed its border and refused any communication with the outside world for the reason that the monarch thought China as the best country with the respect to both economy and constitution. As a consequence of lack of contact with the rapidly growing capitalist countries, China stayed in the agricultural society phase while Britain took off in economy. In 1840, the first war between China and the capitalist countries took place in south of China and Chinese army beat a hasty retreat. In the next one hundred years, the Chinese lived in shame and poverty. It is not until 1978 when Deng Xiaoping claimed that China's poverty was the outgrowth of closing and set up the opening-up policy which promoted the communication and trade between China and other countries that China’s economy took off. For the next thirty years China enjoyed a growth of 10% in gross domestic product every year. There are reasons and factors behind every fall and rise of a country and the leader should learn to delve into the history to find these reasons.
Even in the ever changing science field, one can also benefit from the past. The particular experiment or research may be out of date but not the spirit of devotion, love for science and persistence behind it, nor the fundamental method such as establishing control groups to make sure that only one particular factor will influence the result. One can still learn and inspire from the scientists in the past and their experiences and that is the reason why students majored in physics and chemistry still have to learn the scientific history despite the fact
that the particular scientific attainments is comparatively easy.
In sum, although the dynamic ever changing world is different from it in the past in many aspects especially technology, there is constancy in it and a better understanding of the past is still conducive to living in the present in many respect.
