160"The most essential quality of an effective leader is the ability to remain consistently committed to particular principles and objectives. Any leader who is quickly and easily influenced by shifts in popular opinion will accomplish little."
The reason why we choose someone to be our leader is because we share the common goal with him, we accept his principles and more importantly, we have faith in his ability to keep to his principles and finally lead us to realize the goal. The most important job of an effective leader is to hold his followers and maintain his leadership. Public opinions are easily influenced and when it is against the principle of the leader, he should try to persuade the public to regain faith in his principles instead of compromise himself to reach an agreement because once he give up his conviction, he loses the credibility and lose his followers.
Consider Gandhi, first he try to persuade the public to accept his belief of fighting against the tyranny through mass civil disobedience based on total non-violence although the popular opinion of fighting back with violence. On their way toward the independence of India, Gandhi never changed his mind finally realize the independence of India. Had Gandhi accepted the advise of using violent protest even occasionally, he would have lost his followers and effectiveness altogether.
Another example is from business world. Jack Welch, the CEO of GE, broke the layers within the corporation and simplifies the structure, making GE "informal". Although it is popular to build strict hierarchy in big companies, Jack didn't follow the trend and finally he proved himself right and made his opinions known to all. To follow the crowd may be secure for a leader in business world, but only those who stick to his own philosophy can finally bring huge economic success to his company.
However, I seriously doubt that it will be possible for a leader to be truly effective if he doesn’t share common objectives with the majority. A common goal is the foundation of the leadership. Gandhi and all the Indians share the objective of independence of India; Jack Welch and his employees share the objective of maximizing the profits of GE. Actually, if the leader doesn’t share a common goal with his group, he would not have been elected the leader to begin with.
In conclusion, a truly effective leader must stick to his principle and at the same time make sure to share common objectives with his group.
