103"The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
The studies of history differs from each other, some are from macro perspective, some are micro; Some closely relate to our daily lives, some care the evolvement of our society and environment. The study of history which focus on human’s daily lives is, with no doubt, valuable. Yet those studies which intend to find clues from history about the destiny of all humans, as far as I see it, are of even more importance.
Admittedly, the studies of history relevent to our daily lives are valuable because they influence one’s life in a more direct way. Our curiosity motivates us to explore how our ancestors eat, transport, grow plants, cure disease or entertain. All this events are closely related to our daily lives. The value of studying the daily lives of our ancestors is embodied in its guiding in how we can better improve our life quality. After all, daily routines are the major content of an individual’s life.
However, when we appraise values of history study on certain periods or terms, we stick to the principles that how much the history study can inspire us and how much the study can solve our problems. Human beings, as a whole, are worrying more about some mutual problems like the consequence of wars and the future of mankind. These problems are much more confusing and will more or less determine the future of human beings and the studie on these problems and solutions in history are therefore enjoy greater value.
Studying wars in history, on which albeit is not directly relevant to our daily lives, is a crucial lesson to all humans. Checking any book on global history, wars occupy very much large parts. Historians are interested in the deeper causes by which wars were launched and in which way wars destroyed civilizations. The World War II was launched by Nazi by a simple excuse that some nations are supior than others and large groups of people were deluded and willing to be followers of Nazi. That war brought a devastation to almost all nations yet, in return, gives a precious leasson to people living at present. The main theme of the current world is peace and development because people are given a lesson from history about the consequence of wars and realize that peace doesn’t come easily. Without this lesson, contemporaries may once again be deprived of rights and properties in his or her daily life. To this extent, the study of history on wars is much more valuable than that directly relevant to daily lives.
Humans are small, weak and often tend to be scared when confronting chanllenges from the great nature, luckily, by studying history on how our ancestors time and time again conquered the great nature we could be taught how to dealing with challeges at present. Climate change, worsening entironment and reducing resources are among the biggest concerns globally at present. By studying history, we understand what climate and environment are suitble for humans’ living and how they changed through the history. These studies are very much valuable because they have been driving people from all nations make mutual efforts to solve the environmental problems which determines our future.
Like Albert Einstein said, unless a person has a broad view over issues, he will not make any achievement. The greatest value of studying history is that we could epitomize lessons from time and space all through our history to a philosophical extent, by which we have better awareness of solving problems at present and in the future. Only when having a broad view over various issues in history can we be better enlightend. Therefore, to appraise the study on history merely by measuring how much it is relevant to our daily lives would be short sighted.
