Topic: "Competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."
As it is said in the statement, I do believe that pursue of high grades is harmful to students' study.
Grade can not totally reflect one student's ability of study. Quality of learning contains a lot of aspects, like the ability to analyze, the ability to innovate, the ability to do experiments, and the like. As we know, grade is the result of examination, the purpose of which is appraising the study achievement in the previous period and which is also be performed in the forms of questions, I think it would be more accurate to say examination is a test of the ability to solve questions on the papers. if one can master the skill of solving questions even research item pool, he can also obtain high grade, then dose this mean he have learned a lot? We can call these students "high grade and low actual ability". A famous example is Einstein, who performed bad in school and become the greatest scientist of 20 century. Learning from Einstein, we know that low grade does not mean stupid and incapacity.
Competition purely for high grade damages the purpose of education. The purpose of education is to inspire student to find his interest and then learn related knowledge. If a student spends most of his time to think how to gain a high grade and win the others, it is hard to imagine he can find his interest and then focus on it. Even many students try to find a short cut to the purpose of high grade, that will let him misunderstand what study is, even do not try to explore the essence of study, just like a frog in the well, the frog never know the world out of the well if it does go out, a student who does not spend time on learning does not know the essence. we students should not be the frog in the well.
Competition is also a necessary part of education. Purpose of education is not only imparting students the knowledge from textbooks, but also should teach them the skill to survive and then develop themselves. Every people belong to the society and have to compete with others for each chance. Competition in learning can encourage them to study hard and learn what competition is, which they will face a lot in their life.
To sum up, for learning, we need competition, but too much competition is not what we want to see, after all we are studying and learning knowledge in school, which we should pay more attention to.
