TOPIC: ARGUMENT 238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

The speaker conclusion that to help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills , is based on such reason that Green Mountain College has more business courses, so the percent of graduating seniors had offers from prospective employers from Green Mountain College is higher than that from Mira Vista College.

However, we can find flaws in the speaker's reasoning.

First, the data of survey can convince us the percent of GMC is truly higher than MVC. There is no exact description about the 90 percent of graduates from GMC who had job offers, nevertheless, the 70 percent of graduates has been so narrowed limited-- they informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within 3 month after graduation, and half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study.  The situation may be great different from what the speaker assert.  The graduates who had found jobs did not inform the placement office have been overlooked by the speaker. The amount of such students may much bigger than that of students who informed the office. And the graduates the speaker includes in the 70 percent are all found full time jobs in 3 months. Maybe there are still a lot of students who have find jobs after the 3 months and maybe there are even more students who have find part-time jobs. Why these graduates can not be included in the percent of graduating seniors had job offers since there is no limit of the graduats from GMC?

Moreover, there are still random elements to affect the percent, and maybe in the year after last year, the percent of MVC was even higher than that of GMC. So we can get a accurate evidence to improve that the speaker’s claim that the graduates of GMC is much easier to find jobs than those from MVC just over the data over one year. The speaker should offer more records about the graduates from two colleges in recent years to convince readers that.

Second, if the assumption that the percent of graduates from GMC who have find jobs is in fact higher than MVC, the conclusion of the speaker is still not reasonable. The speaker claims that if we offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills, more graduates will get offers. And the speaker’s reason is the GMC have such courses. However, the speaker ignores that there is probably other causes. The GMC may have a much higher reputation than MVC, which make the graduates from GMC easier to find jobs than MVC. Open such business courses and computer technology will affect the result little.

In sum, the conclusion of the speaker is not reasonable, and need more accurate data and evidence to support.
