Issue 49 “Imaginative works such as novel, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends present a more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience than do factual accounts. Because the creators of fiction shape and focus on reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance. ”
2 Imaginative works

People love imaginative works. With the aid of imaginative works, they receive information, they learn about human experience. What is more, they are inspired to think, which factual accounts by no means can achieve.

On the one hand, I consider factual accounts, per se, as records of history, with which people can understand human experience objectively and accurately. Factual accounts should be recorded about a certain period of time, or about some big events or great people, as detailed as the recorders can. Thus, people can have a clear and accurate picture of what have happened in history. To a large extent, people know about history by analyzing factural accounts.

On the other hand, I regard imaginative works, such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends, as arts, creations and expressions of the creators. Art is not the factual account, while it is a subject creature, created based on the background of a certain period of time and in a certain place, containing the opinions, feelings, and values of the author or the producer. The ultimate objective of this kind of art, imaginative works, is not simply to entertain the public----the superficial function of the art----but to initiate people’s deep reflections toward what the creator presents. The creators of art, therefore, shoulder great and heavy social responsibilities to reveal people’s experience as well as their characteristics and to arrouse thinkings of the society.

According to my observation, factual accounts pale in lasting significance compared with imaginative works. First of all, imaginative works contain more than mere facts, whereas facts are the only meaningful part in factual accounts. The novel, Gone with the Wind, for example, written  about the period around the Civil War in America, presents us, by all means, a whole and vivid picture of the changes happened before, after, and during the war to dozens of ordinary people in a country farm in southern America. While reading the novel, we can feel the sweetness of successes and the sadness of sorrows as if we were the heroes and heroines ourselves. Therefore, a lively picture of what took place during the Civil War formed in our minds. This novel has been wide-spread since it was published, and no factual account about the Civil War is able to compare with this novel in terms of popularity and everlasting significance.

Socendly, imaginative works provide us more information, most of which related to ordinary individuals who can win our sympathy. Take Gone with the Wind for example again. The chief characters in the novel are neither President Lincoln nor thoses famous generals who won a lot of great success in the war. Instead, the character named Scarlette, is merely a ordinary woman from countryside, with personal foibles as well as character flaws. However, it does not undermine people’s appreciation for her, for her strong personality facing difficulties, her lovely optimism for the future, even the mistakes she commits as human beings, and her great determination to change her fate. It is in the novel that people have the chance to have inner communication with the heroes and heroines, to be moved, to be overwhelmed, and to be motivated.

In my final analysis, imaginative works, as a kind of art, are creations rather than mere records. They are created based on reality, but the creators present us more than factual information which factual accounts simply record. Moreover, because of the popularity of imaginative works, the significance of imaginative works dwarf the factual accounts’ considerably.

First of all, imaginative works contain more than mere facts, whereas facts are the only meaningful part in factual accounts. The novel, Gone with the Wind, for example, written  about the period around the Civil War in America, presents us, by all means(觉得语气上不需要这个短语), a whole and vivid picture of the changes happened(觉得to dozens of ordinary people 应该提到这里,感觉)before, after, and during the war to dozens of ordinary people in a country farm in southern America. While reading the novel, we can feel the sweetness of successes and the sadness of sorrows(sadness and sorrows或者去掉一个) as if we were the heroes and heroines ourselves. Therefore, a lively picture of what took place during the Civil War formed in our minds(觉得有点鸡肋,总结力度不够). This novel has been wide-spread since it was published, and no factual account about the Civil War is able to compare with this novel in terms of popularity and everlasting significance.

It is in the novel that people have the chance to have inner communication with the heroes and heroines, to be moved, to be overwhelmed, and to be motivated.

People love(考虑换个词) imaginative works. With the aid of imaginative works, they receive information, they learn about human experience. What is more, they are inspired to think, which factual accounts by no means can achieve.

On the one hand, I consider factual accounts, per se, as records of history, with which people can understand human experience objectively and accurately. Factual accounts should be recorded about (record)a certain period of time, or about some big events or great people, as detailed as the recorders can. Thus, people can have a clear and accurate picture of what have happened in history. To a large extent, people know about history by analyzing factual accounts.

On the other hand, I regard imaginative works, such as novels, plays, films, fairy tales, and legends, as arts, creations and expressions of the creators. Art is not the factual account, while it is a subject creature(subjective creation), created(created去掉) based on the background of a certain period of time and in a certain place, containing the opinions, feelings, and values of the author or the producer. The ultimate objective of this kind of art, imaginative works, is not simply to entertain the public----the superficial function of the art----but to initiate people’s deep reflections toward(on) what the creator presents. The creators of art, therefore, shoulder great and heavy social responsibilities to reveal people’s experience as well as their characteristics and (meanwhile,)to arouse thinking of the society.

According to my observation, factual accounts pale in lasting significance compared with imaginative works. First of all, imaginative works contain more than mere facts, whereas facts are the only meaningful part in factual accounts. The novel, Gone with the Wind, for example, written  about the period around (of)the Civil War in America, presents us, by all means(觉得语气上不需要这个短语), a whole and vivid picture of the changes happened(觉得to dozens of ordinary people 应该提到这里,感觉)before, after, and during the war to dozens of ordinary people in a country farm in southern America. While reading the novel, we can feel the sweetness(glory//joy) of successes and the sadness of sorrows(sadness and sorrows或者去掉一个) as if we were the heroes and heroines ourselves. Therefore, a lively picture of what took place during the Civil War formed in our minds(觉得有点鸡肋,总结力度不够). This novel has been wide-spread since it was published, and no factual account about the Civil War is able to compare with this novel in terms of popularity and everlasting significance.

Instead, the character named Scarlette, is merely an ordinary woman from countryside, with personal foibles as well as character flaws. However, it does not undermine people’s appreciation for her, for her strong personality(embodied when) facing difficulties, her lovely optimism for the future, even the mistakes she commits as human beings(这个放这里不合适,去掉,或者放最后边), and her great determination to change her fate. It is in the novel that people have the chance to have inner communication with the heroes and heroines, to be moved, to be overwhelmed, and to be motivated.

题目有两个对比 more accurate and meaningful picture of human experience  ;the creators of fiction shape and focus on reality rather than report on it literally, their creations have a more lasting significance.
Selina
