TOPIC: ISSUE 109 - "The purpose of many advertisements is to make consumers want to buy a product so that they will 'be like' the person in the ad. This practice is effective because it not only sells products but also helps people feel better about themselves."


Is the purpose of advertisements to make us like the person in the ad? Does advertisement help us feel better about ourselves? The speaker offers a topic that is closely interrelated to our daily lives, but perhaps not many people have ever seriously thought about it. I agree with the speaker that the advertisement plays an important role in selling products and therefore propel the prosperity of commerce. However, I do not take the side with the speaker that advertisement makes people to the person in the ad and helps people feel better about themselves.

To begin with, I do not deem that people want to buy a product is because they will be like the person in the advertisement. As long as we scrutinize our experiences, we will find the claim of the speaker is untruth. For example, when we buy sports suits or shoes that use Michael Jordan as their image, can we entertain wild hope that we will be Michael Jordan. Can we believe that we can slam dunk as fly-man Jordan did in the advertisement? I think, at least, most people do not for the reason that we are not so naive. But what is the main reason that we are prone to buy a product that uses our idol as image? Firstly, the advertisement utilizes our favorable impression to our idol to sell the commodity. No matter whether the product is good or bad; efficient or inefficient; as long as our idol appears in the advertisement, we will like the product without another reason. Secondly, using big stars in the advertisement is an effective way that we can easily discern the product out from other numerous products. This is important because we are more likely to choose the products that we familiar with. In short, it is not because we will be the person in the advertisement that we buy the product.

As for the function that advertisement helps people feel better about themselves, I have to say that the advertisements have nothing to do with it. Or I can say that the advertisements bring us an illusion that we feel better about ourselves, but it does not take a long time that we will be disappointed. How many diet pills can truly make those obesity people become slender beauty? Is there certain cosmetic which has a magic of making people to be the model in the advertisement? How many products can truly bring benefits to consumers as those big stars promised in the advertisement? Strangely enough, despite we know about the fact that exaggerations and even lies are fraught in the advertisements, we are readily to accept those false promise again and again.   

In the ultimate analysis, the purpose of the advertisement is and only is to sell product as much as possible. All the techniques in the advertisement, such as big star image, exciting pictures, attractive sounds, seductive commercials and so on have a common that is to incite our consuming desire. The consuming desire stems from certain aspects of human nature: vanity, sensuality, and being fickle in affection and so on. This is the very reason why we are willing to be captured by the advertisement. We need it by ourselves. And the advertisements make use of it to attain the only objective: selling product.  

Admittedly, I am not intent to slander the role of the advertisement in our society. No one can deny the fact that the advertisement is the most influential art form in modern society and it makes great contributions to the boom of commerce. Nonetheless, I cherish the idea that given the flooding advertisements today, it is necessary for us to keep a consciousness about ourselves.

看开头就知道是限时写的了,不过不知道成功没?如果成功了就恭喜了
语言上就不说了,yunzi的语言一项使我佩服的对象啊,加上好久没碰作文,反应都有点迟钝了,好多表达都想不起来了:L sigh...
这篇我个人觉得比较难写,我当时准备这篇的时候在坛子上搜了好多文章都没有看见很满意的,不过有一片觉得还比较有心意就是他提出advertisement 的main function 应该是 inform and introductive(好像时这样),而现在很多advertisement都背离了这个初衷,为了提高销量不择手段,感觉这个观点可以和你的倒数第二断合并。
还有一点就是题目中有两个句子,两个句子的主语要注意抓住,一个是The purpose of the advertisement,一个是the advertisement is effective,这两点你的文章中都没有做到正面回应,你的第一断实际上就是在讲the purpose,最好能点出来
至于effective,我觉得你的观点应该是ineffective的,因为很多advertisement都是在误导消费者,但是从增大销售量来说又是effective的,我当时列的提纲就是分开说的,yunzi参考一下吧,嘻嘻,不够深刻
1.因为明星效应,加上人们的心里作用(我这里没有否定advertisement确实利用人们be like广告中的明星),所以在销售上是effective的(你的第一段)
2.但是很多广告都是虚假的,过分的夸张,很多想成为广告中人物的消费者都上当了,所以feel better 只是illusion(你的第二断)(其实这样看来你的第一段还是不要否认人们want to be like的心里)
3.发散,广告的作用应该是真实地宣传产品,而不是诱惑甚至误导,这样虚假的广告只会是消费者不信任产品,从长远来看,反而是不立的


嘻嘻,脑袋都有点不习惯思考这么深奥的问题了,很多地方可能不是很正确,仅供参考啦~~
