TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
WORDS: 379          TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2006-6-24
提纲:
1.丑闻的益处
2.它往往能比peaker和reformer更有效果的揭示问题
3.但是,它也有不足:1.转移注意力.2被利用来诽谤

With the increasing prosperity of modern media, common people have been able to access more scandals than before. And in most cases, the scandals revealed have brought some social reforms or improvement to us. Yet the negative consequences that scandals bring about are also obvious, which make us have to be cautious when confronting scandals.

First of all, I concede that scandals can greatly attract people's attention on issues or problems whether in politics, academia or other areas and therefore promote reforms and improvement. There are two reasons may responsible for this; first, scandals often accompanied with flaws in the areas; second, people  always own the desire for perfection and therefore are encouraged to resolve the current problems or crisis . We can find lots of such examples in the human history. For instance, President Nixson's Watergate issues arouse people's awareness of the necessity of constraining the power of the supreme leaders, which finally resulted in the fact that several related legislations were legislated to achieve such goals subsequently. Besides, a recent scandals about scientific falsification in china calls for reforms in academic areas to place more regulations on scientific researches. In sum, scandals can be useful to promote advancement in nearly every area in our society.

Moreover, scandals are always more effective than the speaker or reformer to reveal large problems that a community or a society must address. The main reason for this lies in the fact that scandals often reveal the true aspects of current problems while speakers or reformers often try to conceal some information for certain purposes. Though speakers provide information about issues or problems regularly, we may not be able to acquire any essential information. We can easily find this point in the most common cases of news publication in every country.

However, on the other hand, scandals also can mislead people sometimes and therefore lead to harmful consequences. We may find two classic negative effects that scandal could brought us. First, it may distract populace's attention from more crucial problems to comparative less important problems for political or commercial purposes. Second, some scandals may be utilized as tools to affect people’s attitude and therefore disparage competitors. Moreover, people always fail to think thoroughly when facing scandals, which make such circumstances greatly common in our society. For example, various scandals about candidates appear during the election time.

In sum, scandals can be useful in our society if it could be utilized properly. While people always lack the ability to recognize whether the scandal is true or feigned at the first glance to it , people should be cautious and rational when confronting such issues.
