In the argument the author concludes that the value of the life-size sculptures is going to decrease and the value of the miniatures is going to increase, for the reason that archeologists have recently discovered molds of human heads and hands on Kali, which could be molds used by Kalinese artists to create life-size statues. To support this argument, the author points out collectors have wondered why the Kalinese artists could depict bodies with such realistic precision, so they prize the ancient life-size statues, while now archeologists discovered the human heads and hands as molds for the life-size sculptures and the miniatures did just without any sculpting tools. I find this argument specious in several grounds.引用过于冗长了,最好整合一下
First, the collectors may treasure the depict bodies with such realistic precision of these ancient life-size clay statues of human figures made on Kali Island, but not sculpting tools and techniques the Kalinese artists used to create these sculptures. So the value of these life-sized clay statues of human figures will not decrease, even if, will increase,这个插入的用法很奇怪 for the molds are human heads and hands that maybe those collector are keen. Lacking the evidence that whether the collectors care the sculpting tools and techniques or not, so这个so干什么的? the author cannot convince me that the life-size sculptures are to decrease in value and the miniatures are to increase in value.
Secondly, the argument is scant evidences to substantiate the ancient Kalinese artists used actual bodies as molds, although the archeologists discovered molds of heads and hands on Kali. It is equally possible that the ancient artists just used human heads and
hands as molds, and their skills in sculptures were so excellent that they made other parts of these sculptures in hand, and they could depict bodies with such realistic precision. If that is the case, whatever the value of the life-size sculptures cannot be reduced.
Thirdly, the Kalinese miniature statues were abstract and entirely different in style, but this cannot convince us, which the Kalinese artists didn’t use any tools or molds during their creating. It is likely that the Kalinese miniature statues also have molds, and just for some reasons we haven’t discovered the mold yet. So the author also
cannot convince us in this point.
Finally, even if until now, the tools of the sculptures haven’t found yet, we hardly say the archeologists couldn’t discover them in the future. Perhaps, the tools were easily destroyed and we cannot find them.
In sum, the author cannot justify his or her argument on the basis of these scant evidences. To convince me that the author should provide more information about the collectors attitude about the molds or tools used by artists’ creating. To better evaluate the argument, I need more information about the archeologists for the statues, then forecasting each value of the ancient life-size statues and the miniatures.
