TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 465 TIME:50 DATE: 2006-7-31
Nowadays, our society is pregnant with experts, erudite scholars engaged in a specific field. It is undoubted that experts have played a key role in advancing the world for they make quantities of discoveries as well as make precise and numerous measurement. However beginners, who are more curious than mavens about the fields they are devoted to, can also accelerate the course of some important discoveries.
First of all, experts possess abundant experiences as well as laudatory knowledge, leading to their skillful and authoritative discoveries. In a certain field of inquiry may it be astronomy, geography, arts, or psychoanalysis etc, experts as they were nominated can be more insightful and shrewd than beginners as a result of their expertise, including it so inspiring and objective knowledge that makes it easier for them to analyze any phenomenon to put forward a new proposition and a far-reaching theory. As can be seen from so numerous scientists, for instance, Newton, Albert Einstein, Gauss, who dip deeply into the fields they are engaged in, their discoveries are absolutely not derived from a sudden inspiration or capricious ideas which on the contrary features beginners, but are natural results determined by their insight and skill. Therefore, experts, as they possess broadened horizon, is more likely than beginner to make important discoveries.
Furthermore, being erudite and honorable, experts can absorb more information and expertise than beginners, determined by the depth of their researches. So tremendous, complex information and knowledge are there in contemporary globe that sciolism curbs further cognizance of plentiful fields of inquiry of beginners. In other words, only being more experienced and erudite can a scholar further their research in the area he or she is devoted to.
However, beginner is certainly more curious than experts for curiosity, which though play a important role in discovering, will not last for long for any person. As a renowned psychologist in Qinghua University, most prominent in China and also influential in Asia, once states (And I paraphrase) : " When one was standing at the foot of a mountain, he would guess how far can the scenery be on the top of the mountain, elicited by its novelty , but when he climb to the peak , he would not linger on the question brought forward below, but would measure with acquired experience the time and energy needed for arrival to the next but higher acme." This words illustrates a logic: When one begin, one grope with curiosity; notwithstanding, when one was involved, one forge ahead with obtained knowledge toward the truth.
In summary, the probable wide acknowledged saying that the beginner is prone to make important discoveries is groundless, for the reasons mentioned above. To elevate the amount of discoveries, more experience and information as well as expertise are obviously favorable.
