"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
Words: 597 Time: 1h Date: 2007-01-23
The speaker asserts in his statement that in the society the artists give the lasting values while the critics give nothing valuable. I agree with the speaker in the aspect that artists make remarkable contributions to the society, but on the other side, I can hardly be persuade that the critics make nothing with lasting value. I would present my points of view as followed.
Admittedly, the artists make many artistic works of great value which have brought remarkable value to the human society. Mankind as a species with the nature of seeking for beauty and authenticity is fascinated by anything appealing, and that is the meaning and the worth of the existence of artists since they arouse aesthetic appreciation of the audiences or the views as well as show them the magnificent pieces of art works. Many famous artists - painters, musicians, poets and sculptors - have left us precious heritages, in which the perpetuated beauty and the essence of the arts are enshrined. The masterpieces of Van Gogh have given us impact in vision, while the amazing works of Beethoven would be preserved forever.
But to be honest, there are no standard criteria established to measure the value of a piece of artistic work, so it is hard for us to give a subjective evaluation to them. For one thing, all the viewers or the audiences may have their own criterion towards the value of the what they are confronted and no one can exert his or her own conceptions to anyone else, so different person may hold different opinions to the value of the works. For another thing, the measure of aesthetic varies from time to time in accordance with the area and the era. As a stylish student in the modern society, he may be more likely to be inclined to the rock and roll or R&B but not be absorbed the once popular styles like the jazz.
However, when it comes to the functions and contributions of the critics we can not overlook that they act as a forceful momentum to the development of the arts. Playing indispensible roles in evaluating the work of art, such as novels, films and music and so on, their statements to a large extent prompt the progress in these fields. We should realize that without critics to point out flaws of the works no improvement can an artist make since it is decided by nature that one can hardly be aware of his own weak points by himself consciously. So the assessment of the works the critics show is actually a worthy suggestion toward their works which can help the artists to perfect themselves.
There is a respect that is apt to be ignored called that a critic himself, in many cases, is a great artist. Take the writer of the famous work The Chronics Of Narnia, named C.S. Lewis, as an example, he himself is actually a well-known critic. An artist is surely endowed with the acuteness and unique sensibility towards the art works of others and so that on some occasions one can portray as a successful artist and a prominent critic at the same time, which would never be a contradiction.
In sum, we must acknowledge that artists create a large amount of amazingly enormous values to the society as the statement the speaker asserts, but on the other side, we can not be so arbitrate and single-minded to deny the importance of the function and contributions of the critics, after all, their existence is a necessary element in the relevant fields.
