26The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.
"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."
In the argument, the chairperson advocates the Saluda school board to hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire school system for the reason that he has great accomplishment for the past five years as music director at Steel City School. However, the argument which seems at the first glance to be an obvious conclusion fails to convince us owing to its uncomplete comparable with the two schools and the unwarranted judgment of Mr. Schade’s ability.
In the first place, the mere fact that the two schools are probably various in a great number of aspects weakened the conclusion. As they’re located in different cities with their students coming from totally diverse backgrounds, the schools, in all likelihood, has respective music education heritage. Granted that Mr. Schade is a music director with splendid talent, the author cannot simply assume that just by hiring him will the music education enhance. There’s a chance that the new music director and the school board has divergent views on music education or maybe he’s not adapt to the life style here. Moreover, the facilities and the instrument now at Sauluda School may be most advanced which make the improvement unneeded. As the arguer ignores the differentiate between the two schools, we will not accept the recommend hastily.
Secondly, the ability for music education of Mr. Schade is still open to doubt, for there’s devoid of evidence that indicates the relationship between him and both the rewards and improvement in facilities at Steel City School. That is, Steel City School may put much emphasis on education of music, or the students there have extraordinary gift for music. Thus, they undoubtedly have more chances to win the rewards no matter whether Mr. Schade is here or not. Similarly, the arguer ignores other possible factors that may also lead to the improvement of the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments. For example, a generous sponsor’s donation, or the facilities has been suffering from severe aging problems for many years that they have to purchase a new set. What’ more, whether the chairperson and the board attach sufficient importance to the music education is also a decisive explanation for their music education level. Hence, without the information about music education at Steel City School, the arguer cannot reasonably rely on this to support his claim.
In addition, lest that Mr. Schade would do as well as he was at Steel School if the board hired him, it’s also unfair to assume that he can improve the general music education all by himself. To meet with this need, the Saluda School board should find more excellent music teachers despite of hiring an outstanding music director, given that every single student is included to the general music education, not only the school band.
To sum up, the conclusion of the arguer is discreditable in the terms of his failure to convincing us by hiring Mr. Schade will the general music education be ameliorated. We would need more information to evaluate the benefits of hiring Mr. Schade in a full-scale.
