Just as a philosopher said (and I paraphrase), "Without a heart with wings, the foot will never lead you to anywhere."  To me, pragmatic behavior guarantees survival, while idealistic guarantees a brighter future.

In the first place, idealistic contribute to the development of societies. Across the history of Eastern and Western civilization, there have been more than a few formulations that idealistic can benefit to the society, I will only focus on one. In ancient China, there was a great thinker--Confucius, who lived in the period of Chunqiu (about from 700 AD to 200AD), contributed enormous reflections and effective policies to the feudal government as an idealistic in politics. Confucius spent most of his life time in traveling among immense different feudal countries and trying to persuade those sovereign emperors into accepting his ideas. According to the work piece--Analects of Confucius-- the record of Confucius's excellent and precious words and thoughts written by his prentices, his theories really too idealistic for countries during that period. Although few emperors at that time took in them, his ideas did influence the following generations. Li Shimin-- the king of Tang dynasty, created a flourish period--"Zhen Guan Sheng Shi" as a consequence of bringing some of Confucius's ideas in economy, politic, military and the relationship between the privileged class and common people. In a word, some so-called idealistic in temporal era might cannot be accepted, however, they may contribute to the following generations in a great degree.

In the second place, idealistic views also lead to tremendous inventions and discoveries in science fields. Take Ni Kuang -- a famous science fiction writer for example, he wrote innumerable books concerned adventures and created a new writing school--" Qi Huan School". In his books, there are a large number of interesting things and instruments imagined by him. It has been proved that a lot of inventions in the following years are based on his books. Another impressive example is H.G.Wells.Verne, the famous and implacable author in France, his work pieces led to the invention of telescopes, submarines, airplanes, and so on. In a word, immense science fiction writers lead to our fast and high-developing era in some degrees.

Admittedly, idealistic views could never take the place of pragmatic behaviors. No tower can be built up with the unreal bricks, no painting can be finished with a virtual brush, and no dream can be realized without any practical activities. Similarly, our society will never develop and go to prosperity only under the driving of a captain who knows where the destination is but has no idea how to control the ship.

Pragmatic behaviors create a rainbow, then idealistic views enrich its hue; pragmatic measures excavate a valuable mineral, so idealistic reflections grind it into a priceless diamond; pragmatism build up a bridge, while idealistic thoughts make sure it leads to a brighter road. In sum, pragmatism and idealism are like two legs of a person, with both of them, the body--the society of our human beings can go far.
