ISSUE 208--"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
(words 494)
提纲:
1、对于一部分人来说,他们的外表和装束确实能部分的揭示出他们的兴趣和态度,而且通常一个群体的人的装束具有某些共同点;例如ready-made and inexpensive 衣服反映出这个人朴素不浪费的性格特征。穿着比较传统的人反映出这个人对现代形形色色的fashion不附和或者是不随大流的态度。大学教授大部分穿着比较朴素。而那些当红明星总是赶潮流,穿着奇特目的是为了吸引大众尤其是fans的注意力;再如在日本和服的流行也从侧面反映出了日本对本国文化保护的态度;
4、其次外观和装束只是物质性的东西,而思想和价值观却是精神性的东西;

Do people’s appearance and behavior reveal society’s ideas and values as the statement generalized? The speaker claims so, and I tend to agree only insofar as in certain respects the habits and customs of people reflect their attitudes and values, however, in other respects they are not.

Admittedly, in some circumstances, appearance, habits and customs of a people are accurate indicators of their attitudes and values, and a group of people in the same community or of the same career generally has some characters in common. A general preference for ready-made and inexpensive clothing might indicate a preference for practically or saving rather than spending. And a society whose members prefer to wear clothing that is traditional and distinct is one that values tradition over modernization and does not follow the fashion. Take most professors as an example, they always do not care about their appearance. In contrast stars always follow fashions and wear bizarre dresses in order to appeal the attention of publics, especially their fans. Another one is the prevalence of kimono in Japan also reveals its positive attitudes to protecting their own traditional culture. In short people’s attitudes and interests can be seen partly by observation of their appearances and habits.

However, in some respects, it is the outer condition that limits the diversity of appearance, which does not show any personal interests or attitudes, not to mention revealing the society's ideas and values, or someone who does not care abot his own appearance.  A case in point is Eskimo, they do not wear costumes as we modern people do, but fell clothes, which has nothing to do with society’s ideas and values. Another example is that employees are required, not the inclination of themselves, to wear uniforms by some corporations in order to impress clients a good image. Or a millionaire, whose does not care about his own appearance, wears so common that even mislead you that his is just a worker.

What is more, the mute of people’s emotion is a dynamic process, which could not be reflected only by people’s outlook. Language, works and arts all of which reveals the societies ideas and values are approaches to reflect more effectively the inside of people. For example, the Gold Rush of Chaplin which typically reflects people’s aspiration, in other words the thoughts and values at that times, for the East of America.

The last but not least is that values are means and importance of judgments and opinions about surrounding objects, including human beings, daily affairs and matter. Such arrays of importance of judgments and opinions are the thing we called values. Obviously, if we became known that values only exist in the inside of people, such thing will be only a absurd one that appearances could indicate one’s values.

To sum up, as what I have analyzed above, I only agree with the speaker’s in some respects habits and behaviors of people reflect their attitudes and values. however, I strongly disagree with such opinion in most other respects.

文章论述的过程很完整,只是对题目中后一句话少有涉及.
