207"Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
It is quite true that rituals and ceremonies play a significant role in defining a culture, while sometimes used for other purpose. Different ceremonies always remind us a particular culture, whether traditional or modern. But culture itself means, besides rituals and ceremonies, a much wider essence, which relates to almost every respects in our world.
Admittedly, one purpose of ritual and ceremony in today’s world is to preserve cultural identity. We could distinguish different culture with respective rituals and ceremonies. Towards one same event, people of different culture usually conduct it in distinguished ways. Dressed in nuptial suits, holding the lover’s arm, and stepping into the church. It generally calls up a holy scene of wedding in western countries. The westerners view their wedding ceremonies as a holy moment in their lives. More is emphasized on the feeling of romance in the process. Nevertheless, the scene is totally different in Chinese traditional weddings. Rides in the decorated sedan, kowtows to parents,Noisy nuptial chamber are indispensable programs. Unlike in western world, Chinese pay more attention to the a busy atmosphere, which partly stands for Chinese traditional national culture. Rituals and ceremonies, as a representative of a certain culture can reveal partial internal essence in that culture and thus help people appreciate
and identify with the culture.
However, there are also other respects, in which rituals and ceremonies play an important role besides preserving cultural identity. Mothers always go to church and pray for security of their sons in the far away battlefield. People in Buddhism countries often burn incense in a temple, wish a happily lead life or a successful career. In fact, the initial purpose of rituals and ceremonies is rooted not in cultural identity but rather spiritual belief or even superstition, which Appears especially appropriate in ancient times. Our forefathers usually made distinct rituals to drive away evil ghosts, to bring about a harvest in crop or victory in battle. Some of the primitive ritual continue to be adopted until now.
Rituals and ceremonies are not the only means of preserving cultural identity. Book and document is also a useful way to define a culture, which seldom possess a particular ritual. The most famous Chinese culture, Confucianist culture, in which kindness advocated, has been passed down for thousands of years with almost no ritual, but mainly by Confucius’ great works such as Lunyu(four books and five classics?). It is similar as to another sage, Laotzi.
Actually, culture can be expressed by certain ways, but it can never be seen the shape, smelt the fragrance, tasted the flavor. It should be just a kind of sense that occurs nearly everywhere in daily life around us, through different manifestation. Westerners have a kiss to show welcome while a handshake in oriental countries. A cup of tea serves to a guest as a manner of politeness in China, instead of a glass of beer in Deutschland.
All in all, besides ritual and ceremonies, much more ways exist to define a culture. Nevertheless, culture is rather a humanities consciousness than we can accurately define. Just live in it and feel it. Maybe, you, can add something to it.
