200 Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.
提纲:
1. Statistics collected from dentists
The arguer professes that dentists should target the male consumers and emphasizes the effectiveness of anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff. Based on the statistical data collected from dentists, the argument appears to be well presented; yet close scrutiny reveals that the argument is far from satisfactorily reasoned. Indeed, the argument suffers from several logical flaws, listed as follows.
In evaluating the evidence of the statistics, one must consider how the data was collected. If the statistics were collected from only a few dentists, the results might be unreliable. Perhaps the dentists may be limited in one same area, or randomly chosen from a newspaper or by an irresponsible investigator. At such case the dentists are not representative of the whole dentists; therefore the results from these dentists are not reliable.
Even if assuming that the statistics are collected in a reasonable way, however, how to determine the concept "vague" is also worthy consideration. People who "faint" are very likely not be distressed. For example, when patients take more than standard amount of anesthetic, they may faint. Also, some people may be not accustomed to show their feelings; they may keep their authentic feelings in heart. If so, the number of people who "faint" from the statistics may not the real number.
The argument also mentioned that men are more likely to distress due to the fact that men faint more times than women in the statistical data. However, the severity of their tooth is not given. It is entirely possible that men suffer more seriously than women and the curable process brings too much distress to patients, which is an ordinary condition to result in faint. Also maybe the number of female patients is much less than men, thereby the frequency of fainting in men is higher. It is also possible that women are just the kind of people who are not prone to show their feeling, but in fact they are very nervous from heart. Without rolling out those and these alternative possibilities, the conclusion may not be warranted.
In the final part of the argument, one suggestion of the arguer is that dentists should target male. Actually, when an advertisement is merely targeted to a single group, the consequences may do harm to the long term development of the dentists. The behavior of consumers is very likely to be influenced by others. Such advertisement is very likely to arouse people unsatisfactory, who may think the advertisers are somewhat with some discrimination or not capable enough to cure all demographic people. Why the dentists in the advertisement only target men, leaving alone the other people? In such case, the wildly discussion will bring bad reputation to these dentists and eventually turns the original patients towards other better hospitals. The probability does really exist.
Another suggestion of the author is that the advertisement should emphasize on the anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients. Common sense tells that when a person chooses a doctor, the main focus is on the techniques of the doctor. Hence, the anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of the staff are just the ostensible reasons. They may do some help to the real nervous people, but what about other patients? To better gain the trust and admittance of patients, the dentists should more focus on the actual techniques.
In conclusion, the argument, while it seems logical at first, has several flaws as discussed above. In order to obtain practical and effective suggestions, the author should make a throughout investigation, at the same time rolling out alternative explanations.
