For the purpose of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level, should all the faculty be required to spend time working outside the academic world in relevant courses? In my view the speaker is right in some respect. Working outside the academic world will be helpful for both researches and the quality of instruction. But not all faculty should do this and the time spending on this should be limited.

The college, in some aspect, is thought to be a correspondingly isolated place, which makes it be a little far from the modern world. There is not much competition in the college. Because the most important object for the faculty is to teach those students some certain kind of knowledge. And it does not matter a lot that whether their researches could get some harvest or not. Further more, it is pity that some teachers do not know what has happened in factories which is relevant to the courses they teach.

For most of faculty, it is not only useful, but also important to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach. For example, a lesson, which starts with a story relevant to the course that the teacher has been through by his or her self, is much more attractive that that starts with a theory. Education will be truly effective when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. It will be good for teaching to work outside the academic world and benefit the students a lot.

Moreover, working out side the academic world will improve the quality of instruction from several aspects. Firstly, it makes the faculty familiar with the fact that what problems should be solved in the frist line of this industry. And this would be of help to make their researches more applied to the real industry and put their emphases of instruction on the applied aspect. Secondly, the teacher could tell the students more information about what kind of jobs they should join in the future. So，the listeners probably will learn more relevant knowledge and prepare well for their future.

However, if it takes too much time for the teachers on the work, their researches and the quality of instruction will be influenced. Every person has twenty four hours in a day. If the he or she spends more time on work, there will be less time left for researches and instruction.

In sum, without spending some time outside the academic world, many of the facility would becomes inward-looking. But spending too much time on it is not good for both researches and students.
