ISSUE132 - "The university community consists of three different worlds-the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Because each world operates on its own assumptions and has its own special habits of thinking, rarely is there meaningful interaction among the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences."

The science, the humanities, and the social sciences, known as three different worlds in the university community, closely related together and there are meaningful interactions among these realms. Although each of them operates on its own assumptions and has its own special habits of thinking as the title statement point out, they actually have common resource and share some general research methods and disciplines.
To begin with, at the very early stage of human history, ancient people call what they have learned "knowledge" as a whole instead of dividing it into these three worlds. Ancient Greek philosophers, for example Aristotle, had acquired all kinds of knowledge, and had developed a profound and comprehensive understanding of human lives and the world of the time. The great works of these philosophers covered many different subjects, such as philosophy, logic, physics, biology, etc. These masterpieces laid the fundament of almost all the subjects today and paved the way for further study. Ancient people viewed these philosophers as the embodiment of wisdom. However, people of the time had no idea about the division of the science, the humanity and the social science, they simply called all they had learned knowledge.
As the accumulation and abundance of knowledge, people found it necessary to divide this ever-increasing knowledge into three areas--the science, the humanities, and the social sciences. Because none of us, even the most intelligent one, could grasp all the knowledge gained by mankind. This division is helpful to the further study and profound research of each area and enable groups of people to focus on their own realm. Under this circumstance, specialists appeared, and they propelled the increasing of knowledge and they establish some special methods within their own world.
However, the division does not mean that these three worlds are not related. On the contrary, they have close relation and they are inseparable. For example, modern economists, who deal with issues in the social science, could not analyze economic phenomena effectively without the theories of mathematics, which is the fruit of science. Similarly, a scientist in physics might resort to some philosophic disciplines and use logical thinking, which might belong to humanity. Generally speaking, the theories and methodologies in philosophy could been applied to all the research and practical activities of these three worlds, and the research of all these areas in its turn test these philosophic theories. More specifically, Da Vinci, as a great painter, his broad and deep knowledge about anatomy, geometry and perspective made his paintings more reality and contain scientific rational. These cases illustrate the common point that there are meaningful and useful interactions as well as general method among these three world. The interactions connect them together and make them promote mutually and develop harmony. It is unwise for any specialist could not neglect these significant interactions and merely know their own area.
For all these reasons, one does not have to go very far to see that these three worlds, the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences, actually have common resource and share some general research methods. Obviously, their significant and meaningfu interactions make their mutual promotion and complement possible and necessary.
