In this argument, the arguer concludes that the patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment. To give good reason for this conclusion, the author cites a recent study showing that the recuperation time of the patients, who are treated with antibiotics, are quicker than typically expected, compared to not significantly reduced, with sugar pills. The argument relies on several doubtful assumptions, and is therefore unconvincing.
A threshold problem with the argument is that the author assumes that the study, which involves all the patients, who are treated by the doctor Dr. Newland, have the same the condition of muscle strain as treated by Dr. Alton. It is entirely possible that the patients in the Dr. Newland’s group are young, have little injured, better taken care by others after injured, so most o f them renew quicker than the Dr. Alton’s group. The argument fails to account for the alternative explanation for the study, thus the argument’s author cannot make any sound conclusion.
Even the patients in the Dr. Newland’s group are parallel to that in the Dr. Alton’s group; the author also fails to indicate that the patients, who are involved in the study, are representative of all patients with muscle strain. Maybe, the study only involves a few people, so that the survey is not statistically reliable to draw such conclusion. In order to establish a strong correlation that the treatment whit antibiotics is effective, the study’s samples must be sufficient in size and representative of the reach object.
Even the study’s samples are enough to representative of all the patients with muscle strain; the author is fails to assume that antibiotics are the only treatment for the muscle strain. However, the common sense and experience tells us this is not the case, and it is quite likely those other medicines, which are more effective and take less time to heal the muscle strain. Thus, the antibiotics might very well turn out to be largely ineffective. In short, without better evidence accounting for there is no other ways that can better to deal with the muscle strain, the author cannot convince me about his conclusion.
To sum up, the conclusion, which is made by the author who has disregarded or chosen to ignore several aspects of his conclusion, is on the basis of the scant credibility. To better bolster the reliability of the arguer’s conclusion, I would need more information about the study’s patients, whose size, condition, and other aspects, are comparable. I would also need to know whether there are other medical treatments, other than antibiotics, in order to revaluate the author’s conclusion more credible.
