Can we learn about the idea and value through observing the appearance and the behavior of its people? The speaker agrees with the statement for what people look like, dress and act reveal their value. However, to my view the appearance and behavior can partly tell us the characteristics of a society, but comprehensive understanding about it comes from the experience and communication.

To begin with, we discover that n some country, people’s appearance is closely related to their traditional culture and religions which is an important part consists the value of a society. To illustrate the point evidently, we can take the Islamic countries as an example. The some countries in middle east has the customs that the muslins are used to wearing cloak and headscarf, especially the women have to wear the veil to conceal  their faces which cannot be seen by any man except their relatives and husband. This kind of special dress is the extent of their social values that they are committed to their religious belief and the universal value in Islamic society. It is the muslin’s appearance that convey us the conservation of the Islamic society.

Another mark of social values is how people act and perform in their daily life and formal occasions, for their habit and ritual behavior can really provide us with the accurate signal about their social value and ideas. For example, a society popular with fashionable entertainments and consumption is obviously a society with the values and ideas about hedonism. While the citizens in a country are polite, we can assert that this is a society which respects human’s dignity and possesses the value about civilization and tolerance.

However the people’s appearance and behavior can only partly tell the value and idea about a society, sometimes these features are inconsistent with the main values of a society. We all know that America is regarded as a melting pot or a salad bowl for the social diversity. American people from different religious and cultural background have distinguished costumes and different behaviors to deal with their life. We cannot generalize the American l values merely from these different features. But the individual distinctions do not fade the American spirit shared by all American people, the norms of equality, liberty and democracy. In order to deeply understand the comprehensive values and ideas held by a society, we should experience the culture and values by ourselves and discover the people’s interests and attitudes by chatting and discussing with them. Unless you talk to people, you cannot get the direct information about people’s thought and attitudes and cannot solve the misunderstanding caused by observation only.

To sum up, the way people dress and act does partly reveal the features of a society, while the observation is not enough to generalize the local people’s ideas and values. For a deep understanding, we should combine the observation and communication and the most important thing, experience.
