Whether successfulleadership requires that a leader follows highest ethical and moralstandards is a complex issue--one that is replied of the problems ofdefining ethics, morality, and successful leadership in the firstplace. To address the issue, we can consider three distinct forms ofleadership: political, business, and social-spiritual.
In the political realm, theissue is complex. Successful political leadership and ethical or moralleadership are tied up in the means a leader uses to obtain and wieldhis or her power. A wise way to address the issue is to draw adistinction between personal morality and public morality. In my view, personal morality has little to do with successful leadership, takePresident Clinton as an example, although he has a personal moralityfallacy which many people would not agree with, few would deny hisability to lead as a president. In contrast, public morality has muchto do with successful leadership. Consider Benito Mussolini who wasfamous as the founder of Fascism, his violation of public moralityfinally resulted in his forfeiture of leadership and led to his death. It seems that in the short term a leader will obtain and wield his orher power for his public immorality, while in the long term that leaderwill forfeit the leadership because of the absent of public morality.
In the social-spiritualrealm, profound examples can be found in history. Consider thesocial-spiritual leaders such as Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and MartinLuther King, who have successfully practiced the ethical or moralstandards as they advocated. While, itis hard to find a social-spiritual leader who is famous for his or herpatently public immorality in the history. In my view, the reason issimple, because if a person wants to be a social-spiritual leader, thatperson must maintain the public morality.
One must consider a thirdtype of leadership: business. In the business realm, successfulleadership is generally defined as maximizing profit for a firm’sshareholders and other owners, and a prevailing view in Western societyis that by maximizing profit the leader has fulfilled his highest moraland ethical obligation. While many disagree with these two obligationare the same, they argue that a leader, as a business leader as well asa citizen, has many other obligations such as limiting the pollution tothe environment, providing consumers safe products, and even giving ahelp to the people who are in need. It is my view that a leader shouldstrike a balance between profit maximization and minimizing the harm toour people and environment.
In sum, history informs usthat when it comes to political or social-spiritual realm, a successfulleader must maintain the highest moral and ethical standards. However, when it comes to the business realm, a leader must find a balancebetween profit maximization and doing less harm to the people andenvironment, and even help others who are in
need.
