WORDS: 469          TIME: 00:57:54          DATE: 2002-1-1 4:48:58

The speaker claims that technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics. I partly agree with this claim. In my view, technologies can influence social customs and ethics, while they cannot determine social customs and ethics.
Internet technologies have influenced the way we get and share information. Many years ago, a basketball fan must sit before a TV set in time if he did not want to miss an important match. If he or she unfortunately missed this game, this fan only could get information of the match from newspapers or news on TV. While now the Internet has change this fact. Youtube, a website through which people can watch videos such as a basketball match, a TV show, a music concert, provides a possibility for basketball fans, who have missed a wonderful match, to review that game. These videos may be transtribed by one person, and are shared in youtube to let others get more information about which they are interested in. Thus, technologies have changed our social customs and ethics.
Technologies have influenced the way we spend our spare time. With technology's rapid development, vehicles can take us to further places at the same time take us less and less time. This makes it possible for people who have little spare time to travel without worrying about the job. Some may claim that financial limitation will be an obstacle to drive individuals to go to other places. However, we are more likely to choose to travel rather than stay at home in our spare timw as long as we can afford it. And financial limitation will be dismissed with time goes by. Obviously, social customs and ethics are influenced by technologies.
However, technologies surely can not determine our social ethics. Take human clone technology as an example, with the development of the human clone technology , our ethics have not changed with it fortunately. Most of people such as scientists and other relevant individuals strive to prevent from any efforts to legitimatize human clone technology. Although evidences reveal that some approve human clone technology: once a newpaper reported that some people advocated to clone a Hilter and then killed him because of their intense animosity towards him; and other people may agree with it for the reason that they want to revive someone they love. Obviouly, a person's thought can not be cloned, a cloned person is a completely different person. If human clone technology are widely used, there will undoubtedly be a disaster. In view of this fact, Many nations and scientists are making a contribution to use clone technology wisely.
In sum, technologies influence social customs and ethics greatly. However, technologies cannot determine social ethics. In my view, technologies provides many possibilities and choices, while we can decide where we can go.

Whether successfulleadership requires that a leader follows highest ethical and moralstandards is a complex issue--one that is replied of the problems ofdefining ethics, morality, and successful leadership in the firstplace. To address the issue, we can consider three distinct forms ofleadership: political, business, and social-spiritual.

In the political realm, theissue is complex. Successful political leadership and ethical or moralleadership are tied up in the means a leader uses to obtain and wieldhis or her power. A wise way to address the issue is to draw adistinction between personal morality and public morality. In my view, personal morality has little to do with successful leadership, takePresident Clinton as an example, although he has a personal moralityfallacy which many people would not agree with, few would deny hisability to lead as a president. In contrast, public morality has muchto do with successful leadership. Consider Benito Mussolini who wasfamous as the founder of Fascism, his violation of public moralityfinally resulted in his forfeiture of leadership and led to his death. It seems that in the short term a leader will obtain and wield his orher power for his public immorality, while in the long term that leaderwill forfeit the leadership because of  the absent of public morality.

In the social-spiritualrealm, profound examples can be found in history. Consider thesocial-spiritual leaders such as Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and MartinLuther King, who have successfully practiced the ethical or moralstandards as they advocated. Whileitis hard to find a social-spiritual leader who is famous for his or herpatently public immorality in the history. In my view, the reason issimple, because if a person wants to be a social-spiritual leader, thatperson must maintain the public morality.

One must consider a thirdtype of leadership: business. In the business realm, successfulleadership is generally defined as maximizing profit for a firm’sshareholders and other owners, and a prevailing view in Western societyis that by maximizing profit the leader has fulfilled his highest moraland ethical obligation. While many disagree with these two obligationare the same, they argue that a leader, as a business leader as well asa citizen, has many other obligations such as limiting the pollution tothe environment, providing consumers safe products, and even giving ahelp to the people who are in need. It is my view that a leader shouldstrike a balance between profit maximization and minimizing the harm toour people and environment.

In sum, history informs usthat when it comes to political or social-spiritual realm, a successfulleader must maintain the highest moral and ethical standards. However, when it comes to the business realm, a leader must find a balancebetween profit maximization and doing less harm to the people andenvironment, and even help others who are in
need.

(前后没有对应)These videos may be transtribed(transcribed) by one person, and are shared in youtube to let others get more information about which they are interested in. Thus, technologies have changed our social customs and ethics.

Technologies have influenced the way we spend our spare time. With technology's rapid development, vehicles can take us to further places at the same time take us less and less time. This makes it possible for people who have little spare time to travel without worrying about the job.(这句话似乎没表达清楚且作用不大) Some may claim that financial limitation will be an obstacle to drive individuals to go to other places. However, we are more likely to choose to travel rather than stay at home in our spare timw(time) as long as we can afford it.(这句好像没表达清楚) And financial limitation will be dismissed with time goes by. Obviously, social customs and ethics are influenced by technologies.

However, technologies surely can not determine our social ethics. Take human clone technology as an example, with the development of the human clone technology, our ethics have not changed with it fortunately. In view of this fact, Many(many) nations and scientists are making a contribution to use clone technology wisely.

In sum, technologies influence social customs and ethics greatly. However, technologies cannot determine social ethics. In my view, technologies provides(provide) many possibilities and choices, while we can decide where we can go.
