TOPIC: ARGUMENT238 - The following appeared in a memorandum from the president of Mira Vista College to the college's board of trustees.

"At nearby Green Mountain College, which has more business courses and more job counselors than does Mira Vista College, 90 percent of last year's graduating seniors had job offers from prospective employers. But at Mira Vista College last year, only 70 percent of the seniors who informed the placement office that they would be seeking employment had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation, and only half of these graduates were employed in their major field of study. To help Mira Vista's graduates find employment, we must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumés and interviewing skills."

In this argument, the author concludes that the Mira Vista College (MVC) must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors to help students with their resumes and interviewing skills in order to help MVC's graduates find employment. Although the author's reasoning seems appealing at first glance, I find it contains several fallacies after careful examination.

The major problem is the author assumes the MVC's graduates find it is hard to get a job than the graduates of Green Mountain College (GMC). To justify this claim, the author made an unfair comparison between GMC and MVC: in GMC, 90 percent graduates get offers while the 70 percent of MVC's seniors who informed the placement office had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation. Common sense and experience tells us that getting an offer does not necessarily leads to an employment, full-time jobs can more hardly be found than a general job. Moreover, it is entirely possible that many MVC's seniors who had got a job did not inform the placement office.

Even if the author can substantiate the foregoing assumption, the author's assertion that MVC must offer more courses in business and computer technology is also open to doubt. Firstly, the author fails to provide any information to justify any causal relationship between having more courses in business and computer technology with graduates' employment. Common sense tells us that the author may ignore factors that may have significant impact on the possibility of getting a job. Without eliminating other possible explanations for the GMC's graduates' employmentthe author cannot make any sound assumption.

Even assuming that it is more courses in business and computer technology that contributes to GMC's scenario of employment, it is nevertheless impossible to evaluate the author's assumption that GMC's experience can be applied to MVC. Obviously, the author fails to take into account possible differences between GMC and MVC. Because the author fails to provide more information about MVC, there is a good chance that the students in MVC does not need more courses in business and computer technology for the reason that these courses has little relationship with their majors.

In conclusion, the assertion that MVC must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors is groundless. To bolster the argument, the author should provide more information concerning MVC and GMC, then find the actual cause of GMC's scenario of employment. To better evaluate this argument, the author also should make a fair comparison between GMC and MVC on the basis of more information provided.

To justify this claim, the author made(一直是现在时, 这里也就用makes吧?) an unfair comparison between GMC and MVC: in GMC, 90 percent graduates get(got去年的事情) offers while the 70 percent of MVC's seniors who informed the placement office had found full-time jobs within three months after graduation. Common sense and experience tells us that getting an offer does not necessarily leads to an employment(可以说offer不代表是full-time的, 但是不能说有offer不代表有工作, 个人意见), full-time jobs can more hardly be found than a general job. Moreover, it is entirely possible that many MVC's seniors who had got a job did not inform the placement office.

Even if the author can substantiate the foregoing assumption, the author's assertion that MVC must offer more courses in business and computer technology(严厉一点的说, 你这个都把作者最终的观点扯出来了, 后面的一段还怎么让步啊, 这里的topic sentence你可以说成GMC更多的商业课程是不是真的使得更多的学生找到工作) is also open to doubt. Firstly, the author fails to provide any information to justify any causal relationship between having more courses in business and computer technology with graduates' employment. Common sense(说的具体点比较好, 你可以举例子perhaps/maybe MVC的教学质量好啊, 专业比较对口啊, 所以学生们更好地找到工作, 这样就内容就比较充实了) tells us that the author may ignore factors that may have significant impact on the possibility of getting a job.

Because the author fails to provide more information about MVC, there is a good chance (it is possilbe?) that the students in MVC does not need more courses in business and computer technology for the reason that(since) these courses has little relationship with their majors.

In conclusion, the assertion that MVC must offer more courses in business and computer technology and hire additional job counselors is groundless. To bolster the argument, the author should provide more information concerning MVC and GMC, (and) then find the actual cause of GMC's scenario of employment. To better evaluate this argument, the author also should(should also?) make a fair comparison between GMC and MVC on the basis of more information provided.
