新能源(sun, wind, water)will be soon replace 旧能源fossil fuels (oil, gas), agree or disagree? 2006 年10 月28日技术进步类
There is no doubt that more economical and environmental energy will ultimate replace present fossil fuels. However, I am not such a Pollyanna to say that this change will come quickly and smoothly, instead, I believe this will be a long and arduous task.
First of all, our present major energy “consumers” --- vehicles, machines, house equipments and etc --- are all designed and manufactured to take advantage of fossil fuels. It means that perhaps all these facilities need to be renovated or even rebuilt in order to make them productive for the new energy source. One good example is the application of hydrogen energy in Japan. Approximately five years ago, scientists found that hydrogen extracted from water can be use as fuel and this would be a perfect substitute of petroleum in vehicles since water is cheaper and plentiful and its combustion will not generate harmful or contaminative elements. However, until today, this new energy still cannot be put into application. Why? Since a desirable automobile that is capable to carry a big “water fuel tank” still cannot be figure out.
A second reason this will be a long process to scientists, manufacturers and also government to persuade the public of accepting the concept of new energy and build up faith on it. Just like the very time that people doubt the safety and feasibility of fossil oil, they also need time to trust a water-driven car won’t be conked in the middle of highway.
Last but not least is the expense involved in the application of new energy. Long before the world wide research in new energy, American government had already begun to set up panels in the dessert. However, solar energy only plays a subordinate role in America today. One major reason is the solar panels are too expensive. Just as one citizen said when interviewed by CNN, “not until the day solar electricity can be my most economical choice, it will even be on considering list.”
In sum, new energy is sure enough a promissory energy that will finally replace our present traditional fossil ones. However, we also need to be objective and dispassionate that this renovation will be a time consuming process.
