Agree or disagree: Getting advice from the older friends is more valuable than getting advice from friends at your age.


It is always a complex task to make decisions. One could turn to different people, both young and old, for help. The advice received can enable him/her to have a full understanding of the condition, in order to make good decisions. According to my experience and observation, advice from people of the same age could be more helpful.

Different people hold different values of the world. One thing may act various roles according to different individuals. A recent survey claimed that people of the same age hold much more similar value than people of great age difference do. Take Jane Austen as an example. Her decision of remaining single and living on her pen is beyond the imagination of her parents’ generation. It was her sister, who, too, never married for her entire life, that gave her the advice of being independent. Instead of obeying her parents, Austen accepted the rebellious idea of that time. The great works such as Pride and Prejudice would not exist if Jane Austen had not heeded her sister’s advice.

When making decisions, people always have to sacrifice something for the one they really want. Jane Austen, in her last years, regretted the solitude for her single life. But she never regretted taking her sister’s advice. Because this choice helped her to achieve the loftiest level of literature and encouraged numerous young women lighting up the hope and courage of being independent.

Some people blame the young for being irrational and idealized. But not having experience of such mistakes is a great regret of life. Lots old people regret the risks they have taken and in their youth, and wish their children live within discipline and convention. Nevertheless, in fact, taking no risk is the greatest risk in life. Young people should express their creative energy and courage, so that our society can gain more innovations and diversity.

It is better to listen to your peers’ advice rather that an old man’s. In young people’s ideas, may lie a novel thought and even a new unprecedented that will one day change the world
