In class, we learned both ideas and facts. Usually, a teacher will give many facts to help us understand an idea that contained in the facts. Hence, in my opinion, understanding ideas and concepts is the advanced step of study, and is accordingly more important than learning facts which is the elementary step of study.
First, we can compare the importance of ideas and facts by recalling the way of teaching. As we all know, a teacher generally list some of the key items which he/she wants to show to his/her students at the beginning of his/her class. And then, the teacher talks about each item, by giving out a great number of stories. Finally, he/she underlines the items and tells the students to know the ideas and concepts. As mentioned above, we can strongly draw a point that ideas and concept rather than facts are the key content that a teacher strengthens and a student should learn.
Second, the importance of ideas and facts also can be seen in examinations. Take me for example, I chose two courses when I was in my second year in the university. One is Introduction to Geology, and the other is Interesting Experiments of Chemistry. The former is related to many geology concepts about geology process, while the other is full of chemistry in our experiments. So, I found Introduction to Geology was much more difficulty than Interesting Experiments of Chemistry and got a lows score in Introduction to Geology, even though my major is geology. Apparently, facts are easier to learn, but ideas and concepts are more crucial than facts.
Third, we can learn facts in our daily life as a normal person, while, we are students, and we should go further on our study by understanding ideas and concept. If we fully understand an idea, we can connect it to large number of facts from the real live to support it.
Consequently, due to the above analysis and reasons, the ideas and concepts are more important to our students. Ideas and concepts are the essence of knowledge. Let’s improve our ability to understand ideas and concepts in an easy way.
