Wandering in the human history of development, some thinkers and their thoughts shine in their time and the galaxy of wisdom, while the utter most (uttermost means maximum, you could just use “most of them”) seek for understanding and admiration (I don’t think most of them try to pursue admiration. They try to find out the truth of the world) during their whole lives until they die depressively (not necessarily die depressively, only “without understanding”)at last. It’s subjective and ideallistic (idealistic)to attribute the thinkers’ fate simply in(to) their fortune. Whether those gratest (greatest)thinkers will be taken seriously by a society or not involves more about both the qulity(quality) of society and the content of thoughts themselves.
To begin with, in an autocratic sociey (society), what the sovereign truly considers and cares is nothing but their supreme authority, rather than the thoughts of the thinkers’, no matter how greatest (great)they are. Thoughts are degraded as the tools for manegement (management) of rullers (ruler). Any thoughts that defend the rulers’ interests or boast governers’ (governor ) features (specifically, you could say ”mighty strength”)will be widely propagated in the civilians so as to stengthen (strengthen )authorites’ (authorities’) mental control. In contrast, those thoughts which denyed (denied ) the willingness of rulers would be regarded as heretical doctrine and the thinkers would be punished or even persecuted correspondingly. In Europe when religious theology dominates, Copernicus only dared to publish his great discovery after he died that the earth is not the center of the universe, while the sun is(“while the sun is ”could be omitted) just because he realized that his great thought would overthrow the bible (overthrow is too intense, offense might be better), which the authority would never allow to happen. Afterwards, Giordano Bruno who standed up for Copernicus in pusuit of the truth and science (only pursuit of truth is ok) was scentenced (sentenced )to buring (burn)to death in public. In 399 BC in ancient Greece, the famous philosopher Socrates, for "disrespect to impart knowledge of the gods, to mislead the youth", was sentenced to drink poison and died. Cuntless (countless)examples all account for one point: in an autocratic society which the rulers only concern about absolute control and restrict (restricting)people’s thoughts, the thinkers are hard to have freedom let alone wining respect.
While, in a demoratic (democratic)society which the public respect knowledge and science, the thinkers have enough freedom and suffice (sufficient )chance to express their thoughts, hence easily to be considered and adopted by the society. With many advanced thinkers reenter (why not enter) the public's attention, the essence of all kinds of ideas were selected and the dross were abandoned, and finally the filtered ones become the main stream thinking of the socity. (society )For examle,(example)the well know Confucian essential values: Filial piety, humaneness, and ritual, though were not adopted by Confucius’ time, is benificaial (benificial) for solving some social moral problems effectively in nowadays (current) society as time proves. Through the governmental promotion, it is universally accepted as moral standards and even state religion in east asian countries and has a increasing influence in the global world.(You have to prove present Chinese society is democratic so that Confucius’ thoughts are well accepted. )
Still, in a democratic society, the thinkers are free to claim their views and ideas, but from time to time, their advanced ideas are often far from the imagination and comprehension of the public, and can not be accepted by contemporary persons. James Maxwell, the creator of the classical electromagnetic theory, was born in a period of highly promoting of science. In that society, people were encouraged to develop a research career and scientists were taken seriously by their society. However, even in this circumstance, Maxwell’s work on the electromagnetic field was not accepted and demonstrated until the 9th years after his death. In short, even in a society which admire and give high assertion on its thinkers, in some cases, these thinkers are not accepted by the public.
In general, if the society is relatively more democratic and civilized and the thoughts of the thinkers is (are)forward-looking and able to guide social progress, they can readily be taken into account and adopted by the general public sooner or later. In contrast, in a closed and conservative era, even if the thoughts are very advanced but not for (against )those in favor (power), they will be left out or suppressed.
This issue is very good in general. But you should care more about your spelling. |
