The goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus.

While the speaker asserts that the goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus, as far as I am concern when defining the goal of politics both the pursuit of an ideal and the search for common ground and reasonable consensus should be taken into account.

To begin with, pursuit of an ideal shapes powerful leaders, thereby summoning the masses for lofty goals. There are a host of examples in the human history in which pursuit of an ideal help shaping the characters and personalities of great figures. For supporting example, one only needs to consider Gandhi, the Indian spiritual leader who leaded the passive resistance movement throughout India and finally won the independence of India from the Great Britain. Gandhi, as the leader of the movement, was persecuted by the Britain authority and was put into prison for several times, however he persisted in his pursuit of ideal of forcing the Britain to admit the independence of India. To promote the passive resistance movement, Gandhi in person resisted Britain commodities, weaved cloth for self usage and leaded the demonstration group in face of the threat of the authority. His great determination and courage of pursuing his political ideal encouraged the Indian people to bravely fight for the independence of the nation, thereby finally leading to the victory the campaign. Mandela, who was imprisoned for 30 years for his political ideal, and Luther King, who was insulted and assassinated serve as more examples to illustrate the point.

Moreover, pursuit of ideals, such as the happiness, equality, democracy and freedom serves as the most fundamental incentives for the society progresses. Also, numerous examples bound in the human history. To win independence and more civil rights from the Britain, Washington leaded the American people through the Revolution War against Britain, thereby giving birth to the new nation the United States. To win equal rights as the white people, Lincoln leaded the Civil War and emancipated the slaves in the south. For then on, the American Africans enjoyed the same civil rights as the white, significantly promoting the civil rights movement. The feminism which protested equal rights as the men for women, and eliminated traditional discrimination toward women, significantly enhanced the civilization progress of American society. In all, the pursuit for ideals significantly contributes to the civilization progresses in the history.

In the final analysis, although the pursuit of ideals serves an important role in politics, one should not overlook the importance of search for common ground and reasonable consensus. For one thing, the responsibility of the any democratic government is to fight well-fare for common people, to improve their living standards and to grant them more civil rights, therefore government should search for common ground and reasonable consensus to fulfill such responsibility. For another thing, to win the support of the masses government should aim at searching for common ground and reasonable consensus. The American presidential election may soon come into our minds. To win in the election, candidates usually make promises of satisfying the pressing needs of the electorate, and after being elected as president, those who fail to fulfill their promises and fail to search for well-fare of the masses are often severely criticized and even forced out of offices.

To sum up, due to above analyses and discussions, government should combine the search for common ground and reasonable consensus with the pursuit for ideals in the political practices.
