------题目------
Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
------正文------
Are the rituals and ceremonies important to a culture? I believe to define a culture; those are indispensable factors but not the only one. The rituals and ceremonies help people recognize themselves and thus help define a culture.
Firstly, rituals and ceremonies are reflections of the culture tradition, which include the history of the culture. From them, people can easily find the remains of their ancestor and be influenced by them gradually. For example, in China, there is a ritual called dragon boat festival, a ritual to commemorate a great poet who is famous not only for his achievement in literature but also for his patriotism. When his country was conquered, he killed himself by jumping into a river for he did not want to be governed by the enemies. Each year when the dragon boat festival comes, children are always told that for the good of the country, a person should sacrifice all even his or her life. This is a reflection of typical Chinese collectivism, and through this ritual, the Chinese culture of collectivism passes from one generation to another.
Secondly, rituals and ceremonies can satisfy people's needs for living with others. Human beings are a kind of social animal; everybody needs to feel others and to be felt by others. Rituals and ceremonies give a good opportunity for people to communicate with others and make them feel good. The western Christmas Day and Chinese Spring Festival are both good examples. On that day, people go back home early, and enjoy dinner with their families. Whoever you are, at that day, you do not want your own space, and to stay with others is just what you want. If you are alone, you must feel very lonely at that day. That's the power of ceremonies, which gives people an opportunity and also an aspiration to be with others. Different cultures may have a different form of ceremonies for this purpose.
Thirdly, rituals and ceremonies sometimes are also a way for people to release their emotion especially in modern society with much more pressure than the past, and different ways indicate different cultures. For example, in western countries, there is a day called Hallowmas. On that day, people pretend themselves as anybody they want and walked on the street freely. This is a reflection of the extroversion of the western people. But in China, there are no such ceremonies or rituals because tolerance and endurance is the main concept of Chinese culture.
Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies are not the only factor that helps define a culture. There are some other factors which are also important. For example, science and technology show the civilization level of a culture; literature, music and paintings show the core concept of a culture; the relationship among people in the society shows the culture's political background.
In sum, rituals and ceremonies are very important for a culture and the people of the culture, but to define a culture completely, we also need the help of some other factors.
