144,It is the artist ,not the critic ,who gives society something of lasting value .A person who evaluates works of art ,such as novels, films ,music ,paintings ,etc .

Two factors weigh heavily against valuing a thing ,one is the thing provided to be appraised , the other a standard to judge good or not .Concerned with this process applied in the issue ,which gives society something of lasting value ,I consider artist as the factor to create the art pieces waiting to be identified while critic the other factor set up a system of theory in order to evaluate the works .In this sense ,artist and critic proportion the weight in contribution to the lasting value .

On the one hand ,artist utterly gives birth to a piece of art to put out something such as a idea ,a emotion or a narration ,etc and this art piece is the resource to give rise to the social value .In some extent ,this value may be assorted into three categories ---- monetary ,religionary ,and aesthetic levels .Firstly ,large amounts of money may be  involved when a object is regarded as art .A sculpture of beer cans by American artist Jasper Johns is worth millions of dollars while beer cans themselves are worth almost  nothing .Meanwhile ,in the middle age ,art taught by means of delight ,drawing people’s attention and helping them understand the spiritual through fascinating forms to some religious extent .Many outstanding pieces of art functioned in this way in the churches and are preserved carefully because of this value .Concerned with the third value ,art endows people a skill of aesthetic sense .Without art ,nothing can be defined as a beauty and nothing could arouse the passion to adore and appreciate something .Human will lost the aesthetic sense and these words "beauty" or "beautiful" will no longer function .

On the other hand ,critics are defining what is art and explaining the value of art all the time while ,without them ,art will contain the value in a ambiguous way .Before the discussion on art appraisal ,I'd like to divide the artists into two ----some people who regard the works as a artistic creation while other producers who only do a technical job or manufacture for a living .In the first situation ,even if the person 's artistic skills are well developed ,even if  the piece of works deserves a masterpiece ,for not every artist burns as a artist ,before the artistic  creating capacity becomes acknowledged ,the art piece will hardly be viewed  as  art ,especially when a new appreciating standard is not established by the critics .Despite the worldwide top value paintings by Vincent Van Gogh are quite famous  ,in the painters time ,the paintings were so worthless that only one piece was selled in a low price and the painter suffered with the depression and ended his life in 37 .Why did nobody understand the meaning of these works ? Because everyone judged the painting with the old classic standard which is considered far from the style of Van Gogh . How did the worth come out to the mass ?Critics make effort to evaluate and construct a updating theory system to define and classify the art .This Van Gogh 's paintings is classified later as a realism genre and then we could taste the romantism and passion conveyed from the works .

In the other case ,when the artist is anonymous ,when the original intention to make it is for other sake ,the job of critics turns to prevent the value immerging in the mediocrity .In ancient Greece ,the temples are devised and constructed by amounts of artisans and in some tribes ,the craftsman also produce the works of value .Critics evaluate the value of works which the creator's identity is unknown .Without the appraisal ,the ancient structures may be just regarded as a symbol not a form of art and the craft products may even not be noticed .

In sum ,artist creates the value and critic identifies the value .The combining of the two factors gives the society something of lasting value .Some people may say ,art 's value is invaluable ,but I will argue that without estimation ,the value will be berried under the ground forever .
