Are a nation's cultural traditions primarily preserved and generated in the cities? The speaker claims so, although I disagree. While the cities used to play a vital role in the preservation and generation of a nation's cultural traditions, nowadays this role seems to diminish. At the same time, the towns and countryside are playing an increasingly vital role in this aspect. However, does it mean that government should not fund the major cities any more? Emphatically, no. The financial support is needed for other purpose in securing the prosperity of a nation's major cities(我的理解和你不太一样,具体见倒数第二段).
Cities, especially major ones, used to play a significant role in the preservation and creation of a nation's cultural traditions. Take China for example. In the old times, the cities in China used to teem with the particular Chinese culture: They were the gathering places for Chinese poets to discuss their newly written poems with each other; they were the central places for the painters to exhibit newly drawn traditional Chinese paintings; they were also the best places for Chinese students to study the traditional Chinese culture. (最好举一些国际大都市的例子吧,这样更具有代表性,而且有点抽象,可以具体讲一些具体的文化遗产。)
However, this role is weakened in today's world due to the ever increasing trend of globalization. Nowadays we see little and little trace of traditional Chinese culture in cities, especially in major cities. (这里又举了中国的例子就让人有点不爽了,所以上面如果不单举中国会好一点。承认,Globalization and westernization对第三世界的国家影响较大)Almost all those traditional poems, paintings and so on are now dead things in the museums. Instead, surrounded by skyscrapers that can be observed in almost any country, wearing clothes that are similar as people in other nations, we are doing the same stuffs as urban people in other parts of the world—going to work by bus or by car, shopping in the supermarkets; and our children are watching Disney's films while eating food bought from Mcdonald's.
Instead, the situations in little towns and countryside are quite different. Less impacted by the globalization trend, people in little towns and countryside continue their lives in traditional ways. Still take China as the example. Traditional Chinese arts, such as paper-cut, handwriting with brush pen have survived and thrived in China’s little towns and countryside; typical Chinese mores and rituals are carried out in their original ways; peculiar Chinese food are cooked using the traditional Chinese cookers. And in the USA’s little towns, country music is well preserved, which is an important part of traditional American culture.
However, the government should still fund its major cities, to maintain the mechanism of these cities and to ensure the comfortable life of the citizens. For example, public financial support is needed to sustain the medical and legal systems for our citizens to live healthily and safely; public financial support is needed to build and maintain highways so that the cities can keep running at a high speed; public financial support is also needed to build the public theaters and libraries where the citizens can enrich their lives. (注意题目是文化的保存,这一段要好好考虑一下。我觉得这题应该是说政府应该出资保护大城市的文化而不是讨论政府出资保护大城市的目的吧。这一段出来和上面的连不上呀)
In sum, while no one can deny that a country’s traditional culture used to be preserved and generated in major cities, nowadays this function is diminishing due to the globalization. Instead, a nation’s traditional culture is under better preservation in small towns and countryside, where people still live their lives in old ways. However, the government should still ensure that the cities get the necessary financial support to keep running and to sustain the comfortable lives of their citizens.
有一个问题,你从头到尾举的例子都是China的, 但是很不具有普适性呀。中国是从农村发展到城市的,所以很多文化传统都是保存在农村的,但很多国家都不是呀。 |
