argument 38 The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.
An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplace. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional suplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism.
The newsletter failed to give me any certain information or any precise analysis to convince me that taking Ichthaid is a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism in West Meria.
At the very beginning, the author points out that "a report from East Meria" has revealed that the low rate of catching cold is related to the high consumption of fish. It is rather meaningless to make any analogy between the East Meria and West Meria on the rate of catching cold if many other important facts which can have essential influence on catching cold are ignored. Take the climate for example, if the East Meria is a spring-always city, with sunny days all the year round and a relatively stable temperature, the chances people living there getting cold will be absolutely lower than the West Meria if the West Meria has a rather changeable climate. And what about the life style between the people from the two places? Maybe people from East Meria do more exercises everyday than people in West Meria thus their body are much stronger at immuning to small illnesses like a normal cold. Moreover, even if the climate and the life style between the two are the same, what about the population? High consumption of fish does not necessarily mean that the average consumption of fish in the East Meria is higher than that of the West Meria. If the average consumptioon of fish is not higher than or even lower than that of the West Meria, then the effectiveness of fish on preventing catching cold would not be convincing thus should not be imitated.
Then the author suggests that to prevent colds people in West Meria should use Ichthaid which is derived from fish oil, which also seems not so believable even if there are evidence that fish can reduce the chance of catching cold because no one knows if the nutrient which take effect on reducing the catching cold rate is from the fish oil. If it is from the flesh or skin, then the using of Ichthaid would do nothing to help preventing catching cold. In fact, if they really want to low the rate of catching cold, they could choose eating fish as the same amount as people in East Meria.
What's more, the newsletter asserts that by consuming Ichthaid everyday, the absenteeism would be lower than before, and all its evidence is that colds are the reason most frequently "given" for absences from school and work. Now let's assume that the Ichthaid can really have great effect on preventing cold, which is proved above that it is probably wrong, how can the author assure that the given reasons are actually fabricated? In fact, every child could have used little sicknesses such as catching cold as their excuses for absenteeism from school for other reasons behind. Obviously these factors can not be changed by taking Ichthaid only!
Therefore, if the author wants to convince the readers, he or she must provide lots of detailed information such as the climate between the two places, people's life styles, the essential nutrient to prevent catching cold and how frequent do people in West Meria go to see doctors for colds and so on to us.
