The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
'Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega University should now terminate student evaluation of professors.'
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The author of the memorandum from the dean at Omega University pointed out that that college should terminate students’ evaluation of professors currently based on the phenomenon which is contributing the evaluation policy that the graduates in it can not find ideal jobs comparing the students in nearby university. However, after a careful examination in the following argument, it reveals that how groundless and unwarranted the conclusion is.
First of all, there is no direct evidences show that the grades at Omega are inflated. It is quite possible that during fifteen years the level of students has risen more and more obviously that professors are supposed to give high grades for rewarding. Again as the improvement of the education in Omega, it is natural for students to gain higher grades than before. What is more, the suspicion from the potential employers can not be a reason for condemnation, because the managers are not familiar with the condition in college, there are so differences between the campus and society that their opinions can not be viewed as a reliable reason.
Secondly, the conclusion is also based on an irrelevant reason which explains lower employment. Despite the factor concerning with employers, there are still many other elements influencing employment. Just for example, the courses taken in Omega University are likely less practical in society than those in Alpha. The students in computer science department in the later college are obviously more competitive than the students in ancient Chinese department in the former university in the job markets. In addition, it is equal possible that most of the Omega graduates choose to take the advanced education such as PhD and so on, even many of them finally go abroad for the better chances, while the students in Alpha prefer to seek jobs after graduating. In short, it is hasty to contribute the low employment to the employers; comment to the evaluation.
Last but not least, only terminating the procedure is proved the effective method to enable the better jobs. In the memorandum the author does not provide reliable and detailed information on the explanation from the employers, except unreliable guessing. To help graduates secure jobs more facilely, the managers should communicate with companies and adjust the courses plan, not to just removing the evaluation.
Consequently, it seems to be logical for the university to abandon the procedure since it is natural for their willing to improve the situation of employment. However, before any final decisions are made, the managers and policy makers in Omega University should evaluate all the possible alternatives and reasons on this topic to enable the rights and interests proved verily. |
